Why not?
I mean, my own El-Cheapo Android fondleslab (Tablet) is able to run 720P video flawlessly.
I think it has enough power to run all XBox games (Ye Olde Xbox games, 360 is a different story although I do not doubt that there are cellphones and fondleslabs powerful enough to even run those games.)
And let's be fair, it's not like their own cell phone OS can be stapled as a huge success anyway, they simply started too late in a market already dominated market by players like iOS (Apple), Android (Google) and Blackberry (RIM), and RIM has already started making moves towards Android Market compatibility.
The Windows phone OS also doesn't stand out as it doesn't really offer anything special over the established ones and adding Live Games isn't enough make me switch over to a Windows Mobile phone.
A move towards compatibility with the other OS' for their own apps and games would probably be a good plan and may provide more income over time than placing their bets on their own OS.

Oh wait, Live membership still costs "stupid" per year. Yet another "feature" I won't be getting on my 360 because I refuse to pay for features that should be standard.

SMS/texting should be free. For the most part, it doesn't cost the telco ANYTHING. There's a reason why the stuff is limited to 140 chars.

Yeah, it's called Silver membership. You can do everything Gold membership can except play games online (with other people).
It's a pointless argument you'll never be able to win/convince some people. The skinny of it is you can't expect something for nothing, someone offers you a service you'll have to pay for it. Why offer something free when people are willing to pay for it? It's a pretty stupid business model if you ask me.
