Black Screen at Character Creation

I just installed, and updated, FF XI, plus Rise of the Zilart. When i attempt to create a character it goes straight to a black screen. The music continues and i can alt-tab out, but i cant see anything.
My system is up to par, and im hooked directly into my cable modem\. Any suggestions?

Under game settings in the program menu in windows, you can turn off the character creation animations. Some systems seem to choke on them.

That happened to me in the past, turns out the HDD was shot. I hope that's not the issue you are facing.
