I've seen too many kids who see their birthday as gimme-presents-day then anything else and then throw the world's worst temper tantrum when they a) don't get what they want or b) one of the other kids at the party decides to play with it- I'd just prefer not to have him expect any gifts just because its his birthday.

A fun time with friends and enough sugar to kill a horse, yes- but a new toy store, no.

360 vs PS3 aside, the more interesting battle is HD vs Blu-Ray and HD will come out on top. Why? One word... "porn". That's right the porn industry is behind HD like it was behind the VHS back in the days, never underestimate the power of porn

In a worst case scenario for me, the PS3 did everything my PS2 could with the addition of Blu-Ray. This was a win for me no matter how I looked at it. So even if I had zero PS3 games, I still can play all my favorite titles on a single console. A 360 for me is not nearly as good of a buy because I have no xbox games. so by the time I finished buying a 360, a HD addon, and a reasonable selection of games, I have easily $800 spent off the bat just assuming I buy only 4 games. Clearly not a good value no matter how you try and paint it.
why did you add the HD-DVD drive in that price, you don't need it for playing games......also I still call Blue-ray the next betamax..... I think it was a very unnecessary move, the PS3 would have been perfectly fine using HD-DVDs at most.

I have an HD TV and I am still perfectly content with seeing normal DVD movies, there is no need for anything beyond that.
Because for my comparison I was looking for a High Definition DVD player. The comparison I used is only applicable to me. Since I was looking for an HD player, clearly the 360 without the HD-DVD addon would not even be in consideration.

Sorry Keavy, it has nothing to do with the whole innane PS3 vs 360 argument for the general populace. I was only speaking about it's application to my personal use. I think I was more then fair in pointing out which groups which system would be a good value for.

Blockbuster has opted for Blu-Ray over HD. Two years ago this would have spelled the end for HD. But with on demand and Netflix is Blockbuster relevant anymore? Or, to be more to the point, are their decisions relevant to this battle at this juncture of space, time, and tech?

Also concerning porn, It no longer has the influence it did in the VHS/Betamax days. There was not internet then and Video was the only way to get it. Now that we are in the age of highspeed internet, the Porn industry will have little to no impact on it.

The winner will be determined by who has the most major studio support. Because lets be real here, if the studios are not producing it clearly people cannot buy it. Blu-Ray has more studio support, period. The reality however is this, at best Blu-Ray and HD-DVD will remain niche until they are on the same cost level as DVD. Blu-Ray will simply own more of that "Niche" market.

Gawd, it's the return of the Beta-Max versus VHS wars.

Just wait 2 years and one of them will be more dead than 8-track tape.

OMG HD-DVD will win because they have PORN!!

Yeah, that would matter if someone deleted all the porn off the internet. Then, why would we need the internet?

Good point, I guess. Yet there are plenty of places where you can download movies or see them streamed yet rentals are still booming. Physical media still has a place in the digital world

Oh you are 100% correct, physical media will maintain its place for some time yet. I was just referencing the days of porn really being the determining factor in a format war are over.

The reality is this, until SDTV is completely eliminated people will never have a reason outside of "Want" to upgrade beyond DVD. That is why I said Blu-Ray and HD-DVD will remain niche for the time being. I for example am not replacing my DVD collection with Blu-ray. That would be insanity as I have hundreds of DVD's. Not to mention that buying them on Blu-ray or letting the PS3 upsample them really has little to no actual impact in their quality. The only reason I replaced my VHS with DVD's had nothing to do with quality on older stuff, it was 100% about space. Since DVD and Blu-Ray are the same size anyone who gets rid of DVD's to replace with Blu-Ray or HD is a fool. I am simply buying all new media that is formatted in HD in blu-Ray. That in my opinion is the smart way to do it, If the show is in HD get it in blu-ray. If the show is not, save $10 and get it in DVD.

Once exception to the upsampling bit, FFVII Advent children. That movie upsample looks freaking insane.

I have yet to see a movie I want come out on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD that screams "I must only be viewed in 1080p!"

That and the $10 more thing keeps me from upgrading.

300 is a prime example. I can go out to Wal-Mart and get the DVD for $15 the day it comes out or for $29 on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD over at Best Buy.

Lots of changes in the Blu-ray camp in the past 2 months.

http://www.blu-ray.com/news/

Of particular interest to me is Funimation and the Disney tour.
I think the Disney tour is going to generate a great deal of buzz, simply because..well It is Disney.

Funimation I find interesting, not sure what the point of putting Anime like FMA in HD when it was not even drawn in that format. This is a case where I think exclusivity will hurt them, I see no reason not to buy DVD in this hell those are expensive enough on their own.

I own Planet Earth in Blu-Ray, I being of the type that finds educational crap interesting am fascinated by this. The difference in the DVD and the Blu-Ray is phenominal.

Bridge to Tarebithia just came out..I am intrigued but unsure if it is worth the blu-ray cost. It was a visually stunning movie..but it was CG and sometimes CG does not translate into HD well.

Peter Moore has left Microsoft to work for EA Sports.

Got a feeling he may have been asked to leave over some recent problems.

True dat.

Out of curiousity can/will Blu-Ray players be able to play (regular) DVDs? And ditto for HD?

Yep both are fully backwards compatible. If they were not they would have died a brutally quick death.

In many cases they can do that "Progressive Scan/Upscale" thing-y that makes them all pretty.

So there is pretty much no reason to replace your DVDs unless you really are that anal about the quality.

EA got that MS dude and MS got an EA dude apparently  a nice exchange of staff, kinda like when Metallica got Ozzy's bass player and Ozzy got their old bass player

100% Zero reason to replace your Dvd's. As I said, I am only buying new stuff that is specifically recorded in HD going forward. I will not be replacing any Dvd I currently own.

Also DVD's still get the better bonus features.

I am a bonus feature whore which is why I have the four-disc sets of LotR and Narnia.

You talking about the MS/EA thing or the Metallica/Ozzy thing?

Well I have no idea whether those people are any good at what they do but I'd guess EA got the better deal

And obviously Metallica got the better deal  Robert Trujillo is an awesome bassist (I've seen him play the bass like a pair of bongos ) and Jason Newsted sucks ass

Nope, all I saw was Some Kind Of Monster and all he says was it was the best thing for him to do, he just wasn't hardcore enough for them

Speaking of gay... there are some kinda dubious pictures of Kirk and Lars, dunno what's going on there  :?

I don't know if it was Behind the Music or some other documentary, but the guys from Queensryche (Who were opening for Metallica on Jason's first tour) fully backed up the whole story about how the other guys in Metallica hazed him constantly.

Also, I know this was in Behind the Music: James and Lars basically consider themselves to be Metallica and it took Kirk years to earn their respect and actually be considered a member of the band.

Yeah think Kirk mentions that in Some Kind Of Monster, not sure I'd say "years" though but the band was started by James and Lars. Kirk's an awesome guitarist, better than James and Lars is a drummer so... <insert drummer jokes here>

Lars is a dick anyways. Ontop of the whole Napster thing (which was all him btw) in the documentary he pretty much goes out of his way to be difficult and oppose everyone else at just about every opportunity he gets.

Ehh, with Napster gone better illegal music downloading services have replaced it.

I cracked up though when he started throwing a fit over it. Didn't he realize that by making such a big deal about it he was helping to promote the site?

Can't really promote the site after it was taken down from being sued :P Napster was already huge then, it didn't need any more promotion. That pretty much made him the most hated person in rock history though
