Yeah, my mom's friend just got a new PC with Vista pre-installed and it is the biggest pain-in-the-ass. She asked me to set it up for her and every f***ing thing you do in goddamn Vista requires you to select "Allow" or "Deny" from a pop-up.

So yeah, prepare yourselves for a glut of jokes (a la "Chuck Norris") about that until Microsoft releases a fix or people run out of them.

On the good end, Vista does look very Mac OS-like. Now all they need to do is make it as easy-to-use. Oh, and having more than MSN, Earthlink, NetZero, and AOL as options for your ISP would also be nice.

Its not my PC and I don't use Windows so I don't care. I just thought it was funny is all.

It's due to the built in firewall. My Norton firewall does the same thing. Once you allow or deny a program, it won't ask you again. It's just making sure that the program is not accessing the internet due to a keylogger or similar proggy.

I'd rather have a firewall then not have one. :P

I think it's pretty good MS built that in, they have been slapped a lot with the release of Windows XP about the major security issues that were in it.

They built Vista to be safer for people to use on the internet which is a good thing in my humble opinion.
Even though people will find out the other leaks and some will even abuse that.
Microsoft has learned and will try to close the holes asap.

The Allow/Deny stuff will go away soon enough as Windows will hopefully remember the settings.

I won't be running Vista any time soon myself though.
My biggest fear is not the holes or bugs, I know how to lock out my PC from outside threats.

It's that Windows Vista will run on my machine, but also will be the only thing that runs.

The security features of Vista are really pretty nice and so are a lot of the other features. The one thing that will keep me from using it for probably a year or two is that it doesn't run ALL xp programs.

It runs the vanilla stuff just fine. Don't count on being able to run games on it, though -- especially older games. You might get lucky and have it work. You'll probably have to fiddle with things or put up with slight misbehaviors. If you're unlucky, it just won't run.

Another major issue with Vista that will ensure that XP never dies is it's footprint. 20GB is HUUUGE. Hell, that's bigger than the entire hard disk for most of the XP systems out there. Not bigger than new systems or new hard disks, but who wants to buy something new that doesn't let you do anything that you can't already do with existing systems?

I expect vista to be huge in the enterprise area and be a minor hit with the "gee-wiz" crowd, but it will be a year or two before you see average users needing to replace XP with Vista (or really wanting to do so).

Yeah, I should have made this a little clearer: The Allow/Deny stuff is not just on the internet; its on everything. As for remembering stuff, I dunno. I just got the thing up and running and now my mom's friend can use it to play free internet games, watch porn, and look for men on "Big and Beautiful" dating sites.

See, her old PC died and I set up her new one for her so she wouldn't ask to borrow mine. There are about fifty known viruses for Mac OS and so far mine has never come across one of them and I'd like to keep it that way.
