I should be shot.
I just realized, while waiting for someone to come and kill mobs for G1 with me, that just about all of my playing in FFXI hasn't really been me playing.
I've always gotten lucky and been able to find help with things. I got some random high level to kill mobs for me in Gusgen at Lv18 for my magicked skull while I stood back and fingered myself.
Half of the equipment I've been using was purchased with gil given to me by some other random high level after they found me on Gaia.
I was walked through the Magicite mission to get Rank 5.
sh*t, I didn't even purchase my Jujitsu gi or my Life belt, people gave them to me.
I've had people holding my hand this whole time, and I've never been able to fend for myself. I'm practically helpless without high levels, and I'm clearly not cut out for the game when they aren't around.
Therefore, I should be shot and my account should be canceled before I can get to it again. That is all.

Ya, help is good. If you think about it, to balance things you need to put out about 5 times as much as you get -- just assuming you need a single group to do most things. Once you get to the alliance-help stage, it's 18:1 or even worse for the help out versus help in.
It's a good sign when people like helping you. It probably means your help-karma is pretty high. MMORPGs are not for those that don't like helping others.

FFXI is a game that is _all_ about teamwork. Few people can do much significant without help, and even then it usually requires large expenditures of gil via meds. The only way to do G1 without some form of high-level help is to do it with at least 5 other people that are capped at level 50.

Hell, I look for help on a lot of things. My motto: Throw some more Level 75's at it!

Whenever someone tells me "someday I will pay you back" I tell them the best way to do that is get bigger and help some other new hand out.
Got THF to 15? Help people with the skull.
On my main LS we often take out new people to the Mhara side, get them the 3 items for the quest there, and a Carbuncle's Ruby too.
Have you any idea what a MNK's 2 hour will do to the M 2 - 3 Dragon? Use Focus just before hitting the BC, it will stay with you in that one.
Just escorting some new WAR 10/- to the dunes and keeping agro off them is a big favor for them.
There is a LOT you can do.

I made some of my best friends doing G1 back in the old days when no one was higher than 50. They're all pretty decent XP camps for 6x50, too. I feel a bit bad for new folks these days, since there are a lot fewer oportunities to find out who'll hang around and keep helping and who just does the old "loot'n'scoot".The only way to do G1 without some form of high-level help is to do it with at least 5 other people that are capped at level 50
'Dun worry about it. You'll play other jobs up if you stay with FFXI for long. Even if you don't, monk is a great job for a lot of PMs. 8-2 (or 8-3?) -- the 4xPot mission -- pretty much demands a monk. It's not mandatory, but the mission goes from repeatedly beating your head against a wall to "oh, that was easy". Snoll, Ultima, & mamets are good with mnk, too (and unlike some other jobs, mnk won't be turned away from any of the PMs).The problem is that I'm Lv50 and a MNK. When was the last time you asked a Lv50 MNK for help with something?
You'll have lots of chances to help folks, never fear.

Thats not true Jedikitsune. Heck even though I did alot of lvling before I did missions (to the point where I soloed most of them) There are things that you just CANT do alone. In fact there are alot of things you can't do alone. Even when it comes to lvling, unless you would rather spend hours of soloing to gain one lvl (if you don't die). Secondly so what if your a monk. How many times have I had to have a monk help me with AF and Coffer Key? ALOT. True any high lvl could of done so. But Mnk/Thf = OMGWTFBBQ. I stood back as my Mnk Friend slaughtered Everything in the Eldieme Necropolis. He helped me with Mission 5-1. And not to mention, Mnk are fun to party with. (Envies that Aurusan Fist Move, and Raging Fists) Even as a Rdm, and Im supposed to be able to solo alot of stuff, I still need help from higher lvls some times. (Well not anymore, but then again I am almost lvl 70) If you want a game where you can do everything on your own. Go to the dark side and play WoW.
FFXI is all about teamwork. Even if you seem useless, your not. Just by being in a party it allows them to even fight. Your friends that helped you, probably skilled up or got drops they needed while doing so. So nomatter what, never see yourself as "Useless" because its not true.

DRK 75, RDM 75, 65 PLD

Re: I should be shot.
You're right and wrong at the same time. You're right in that you seem to have had it easy. You're wrong that you should be shot. I have a couple friends that are always willing to help, actually, more like we're always helping eachother. Getting anyone else to help has always been impossible. I've gotten lucky maybe twice that I can remember, that's it. For me, every day on FFXI is filled with struggle to make a decent living and hard work for everythink I have and want. Not always easy with the massive undercutting people practice now. I got undercut from 200k-100k the other day in one sale. Usually its just 10k-20k at a time making it difficult to sell, but 100k undercut tends to sort of ruin the profit margin for a long time.JediKitsune wrote:Therefore, I should be shot and my account should be canceled before I can get to it again. I guess what I'm saying is that you should consider yourself lucky that you have people like that to help you along. There's nothing wrong with that. In fact, that's great. I only wish I knew more people like that.

I agree with the rest you shouldn't beat yourself up about this.
A lot of stuff can't be accomplished alone,
in all honesty I have been helped with a lot of stuff in my newbie days as well.
When I was just a young cat roaming around ronfaune after a day of grinding (lvl 8 or 9 at the time) I went to Sandy and some strange friendly Japanese charactar walks to me and offers me a trade.
In this trade there was a complete set of lvl 11 armor and weapons.
For subjob items my friends who were in their 40's->60's in that time helped me get everything.
Those friends also helped me get the keys for Khazam.
For G1 I was helped by the same and other people that were well in their 60's and 70's.
Same goes for my complete AF gear for whm. (the first job I leveled up high.)
Fact is that getting stuff done the way "it was meant to be" does not exist anymore unless you start a new character with 5 friends and do stuff with just them.
This game has been around so long that everything can and in most cases must be done with high level help.
With all the help I've gotten in the past I vowed I would help other people with stuff when they need it and I have time to do it.
(There is a limit in things I do for people tho, but I never asked money to help other people out.)
