How upset am I?

My PS2 seems to have sorta crapped out on me :cry: The good news is I can Play FFXI all I want because it runs off the HDD. The bad news is I cant play any disc games because the PS2 cannot read any discs. :x Ya put it a disc in and you can hear it whir but then stop, whir but then stop. i know its not the discs because I tried 7 different games, a DVD, and a CD and none of them could be read. I dunno if the reader mechanism is busted or what. The one thing that I always noticed is that the HDD always made but PS2 kinda hot.

I kinda dont wanna send it in because Im addicted to FFXI and withdrawls are going to be a bitch especially with how long Sony takes to fix it and send it back :lol:

During my Dragon Quest VIII marathoning, I noticed some odd noises from my PS2 and even had a crash once. I guess they are reaching the end of their expected life cycle... maybe the slim units will drop in price and I can pick one up before my PS2 completely dies. ; ;

Ya know it is funny that you mention that because that is the disc that was in my PS2 when all of this started happening.......... :o :?

No PC to use while the PS2 gets fixed? This can be run on a surprisingly obsolite PC. I have run it on an Athalon 1800+ (it will go down to the 900 mhz. range), 3/8 gig of memory, PCI MX440 vid card with 64K video ram, dialup modem, uphill both ways in the snow barefot. :lol: :lol: :lol:

I've had this happen to my PS1s too Cyn. Thankfully my PS2s have been spared.

We ended up having to have the PS1s eye replaced. Or whatever the name of the thing that reads the disc is...anyway, that may be your problem if it isn't reading anything. Of course, fixing it usually costs about as much as a new one lol.

You could also try using a DVD player cleaning disc. That usually helps when it starts getting all "unable to read disc"y.

Unfortunately I have super obsolete IBM A21m Think Pad which has a P3 700 mHz processor and a whopping 4K video card. :o Running Solitare causes the machine to slow down.... :lol:

I already tried a disc cleaner and it said it was unable to read disc. I do think the same thing as you though that the eye is the problem. I am gonna call Sony tonight to see what the cost and everything else entails.

The slim units don't support a HDD. To get a "new" PS2 with a HDD you have to find a used one.

If the laser eye is shot its pretty hard to fix :( (i opened my ps2 once and i had to buy a new one cos it never worked again) :lol: you can buy new ones, its just a matter of fitting them

As much as I hate to do it (Loyal Mac fan) I'm gonna have to do that.

But only for FFXI. And CoD2. Maybe HL2, Doom 3, Elder Scrolls 4, Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, and The Movies. But that's IT!

Oh, and a N64 Emulator because no good ones are on Mac.

Probably don't exist cuz no one wants to take the time to program for an OS almost no one uses at home compared to the masses of Windows users. :rofl:

LIES! My computer defines 'obsolete yet functional'. It cannot run FFXI. Not in the slightest. It's about a year older than FFXI, and definitely canNOT run FFXI. No enough CPU speed, nor HD space, nor RAM, nor most espeically a good enough video card.

It can run on older PCs ('02 and up), but not on obsolete ones.




I confess this is actually just me venting about my computer's crappiness. T_T

Yeah, that happened to my PS2 >.> and I sent it in to get it fixed...couple years later, it happened again! woo! The problem is a peice that determines the distance between the disc, and the lens, it gets loose over time, making the distance too wide, so the consol can't read the disk properly. That is my understanding of it. When you send it in, they just adjust it/replace it, w/e then send it back, most likely, it'll happen again after some time >.> go figure.

(Mac's really are so much better than PC's outside of gaming too)
