Ok, now that the title caught your attention, I'd like to say that no Pup is not better then Rdm....well...depending on what you need.
The end game ls I'm in has a pretty good Rdm, Zedine, Lv75 with just about every sub. We all get together and go tackle Riverne A01 as a LS. Well, I go as Pup/War, he goes as Rdm/Nin. We don't have enough Nin's to kite, so he solos one mammet and I solo another. Guess who died, and guess who not only soloed their mammet, but took over soloing the second when the first soloer died?
Pup ftw. The 3 melee forms barely landed a hit, my automaton silenced it's mage, and my automaton was kind enough to drop me a few Cure III's. On my way to Diabolos.
After we won, there was a group who had failed in Monarch Linn. They asked if they could borrow me, not the Rdm. Food for thought, eh? Pup has hidden strengths....

Good job and congratulations on getting passed 2-5!
Don't forget that at that level RDM is missing several key spells that make it so powerful later on, namely Refresh (41), Haste (48 ) and Utsu: NI (74).
Player skill also has a lot to do with it as well. I don't know your friend but in my case- I tend to favor 1-2 subs and although I have other sub jobs available for certain situations I'm not as experienced with using those subs. I know my strengths and weaknesses as a RDM at various levels, but if I'm using an unfamiliar sub-job I don't know my limits as well.
The same could be true for him- or he might just have had a bad time where the damned thing was giving him hell and he couldn't keep shadows/ss up enough.
But anyway- enough detracting from your victory! Its nice hearing about PUP successes, so many people are just willing to go lolpup and not see its potential.

It's great to see PUP finding some more uses. Congrats on 2-5; that's a fun fight. IMHO, it's too bad most of the PUP uses are niche-only. I think the job could really do with some fleshing out -- particularly giving it primary role abilities.

BST is awesome on mammets, too -- and so is SMN. All the pet jobs are really good at "off-tanking / off-kiting"; ie. keeping something busy until everyone else is ready to deal with it.
One thing I found out on mamets is that BST charm (even sub/bst) has a built-in 1-2s "stun" or "pause" that is forced onto the charm target even if the charm fails or the target is uncharmable. So, you take a BST or sub/bst (nin/bst is great) and run around charming your mamet. The thing will rarely get close enough to take a swipe at you. Charm refresh is quite fast, too.

I find that most NIN's don't really understand how they hold hate. PLD's do. Provoke every 30 seconds, Flash, and Cure. NIN just have to remember that with each shadow that reduces their hate and if they're too busy counting shadows and forget to voke then anyone in the party who produces a hate spike can steal it.
