Having never read the books it supposedly based on, I was A) Lost and B) wishing I didn't waste money on HBO for something I never plan on watching again. I just wasn't all that into it. Kind of like BBC's Robin Hood. I gave up half way through the first season.

I do kinda wish they had done lil notes or whatever introducing the characters better. As someone that read it about 3+ years ago, it was tough to remember who was who, and the names were rarely said. With such a huge cast, it definately woulda helped alot for people who haven't seen it, or read it ages ago. To me the book started fairly slow and didn't get particularly interesting untill over an hour in, I imagine the show might do the same, so don't give up on it just yet :p

Also for those of you without HBO (like me!) you can download it from eztv.it or piratebay.

Well, the characters were introduced pretty much as quickly and chaotically in the book. You're not expected to remember every single name and description the first time they come up, and the prologue isnt supposed to make sense yet. When I read the book, it took me several chapters to get straight who was related to who and they all sort themselves out over time. All of the characters will be important at one point or another, but not right off the bat, so you will have time to get to know them, especially the ones that become your favourites. Martin writes very strong character arcs that all interlace later on as they get more developed.

This will help though if you desire. A non-spoilery info update on the show (locations, houses, characters, etc.):

All in all, this first episode bodes well imo for a very strong, excellent series. This story starts slow, but gets REALLY good and engageing, so I'd recommend not giving up hope yet Karou.
