I don't really like this sort of thing, while the motive of wanting to conserve power is laudable... SE's datacenters don't take that much power. If anything, they can run on the diesel gen-sets for months (the associated data lines are still active, telcos are not shutting down). SE isn't alone either, there are a lot of other 'self-restraint' shutdowns or cancellations. It's as useful as the Earth Hour thing and just as annoying.
A pity SE's billing practices made it difficult for them to discount the March subscription fees.

Are they actually to the point of charging for accounts now? I never heard anything about that starting up.

The account fee was in reference to FFXI methinks, I'm sure SE will put something up on Lodestone and send e-mails out when they start charging a monthly fee for FFXIV.
