Oh, I understand. A lot of third-party torrent programs come with bloatware at best, spyware at worst. You just need to be carefull about which ones you install.

The FFXIV patcher itself is a torrent application, just written/endorsed by Square and it only works on XIV patch files. :) The patch files themselves can be opened by any torrent program, and they'll pick up the feed from people using the Square patcher; there've been two times during Beta where my download hung up, and switching to a third party torrent program got it running again. :) I try not to use them unless I feel like I have to, though.

I watch a lot of anime, torrents are a must these days (I miss XDCC bots on IRC :( ). Other option is a whatyoumacallit... download enhancer or something, and get the direct download.

1 word:

Usenet

I may have to look into a usenet sub..getting harder and harder to get quality fansubs these days, especially ones that are encoded properly so I can stream them without having to repack the bloody things.

Sad thing is, I would gladly support sites like crunchy roll if they would quit being dicks and support PS3 streaming. I want to watch television episodes on my *gasp* tv, not my bloody pc monitor. :x Which reminds me, it is a bloody shame DB dropped bleach..I am grateful to the group that picked it up, but good god they put so much garbage on the screen. Somehow they managed to make bleach worse then one piece for all the useless flashy fansub added crap.

Heh, Bleach was never really good in the first place. DB dropped Naruto first then Bleach, now all they're doing is some really old show. Horriblesubs, Crunchysubs and FUNiGuys are doing it currently. Two torrent sites I look at are www.animesuki.com and www.nyaatorrents.org, animesuki is better organised and easier to find what you're looking for but they won't host or give links to anime that are licensed so for stuff like Naruto and Bleach I have to look at nyaatorrents. Horriblesubs seem to do everything though quite a lot of the time the torrents are pretty slow even when they apparently have loads of seeds, sometimes if you get lucky someone puts up a link in the comments to a direct download from one of those file sharing websites.

I also look at FFFpeeps website since I watch a few of the shows they sub (Giant Killing, Kaichou wa Maid-sama) and they put up direct download links to their own server.

Seitokai Yakuindomo is my current favourite show :)

I'm more into J and K-drama these days.
As for encodings, MKV/H.264 is where it's going Tivia.
I bought myself a mediaplayer for that about a year ago.

I don't get it, but it works.

Square Enix are apparently stupid enough to make a torrent system without putting up any seeds for people to download from :?

I don't understand it lol

I downloaded the patches using the torrents but it's not recognizing them.

It keeps wanting to continue to download the 2nd one and it as 55.8% and another like 5 hours to go...

You need to make sure you put them in the right folders after you DL them.

The 9/18 patch goes in the file folder that starts with 2d2, and the 9/19 patch goes in the folder that starts 48ec.

I did lol

It tells me that the Boot Version is still 2010.09.18.0000

The directory that they are in is

Computer > Local Disk C > Program Files > SquareEnix > FINAL FANTASY XIV > downloads > ffxiv > then their respective folder names

I don't get it lol

For my system, the patches are located in My Documents > My Games > Final Fantasy XIV > downloads >ffxiv. The torrent downloads a ffxiv folder and then subdirectories inside, you should be able to simply drop that into the downloads folder and overwrite whatever's there.

you can download the update files n put them in the correct "gameuser" folder of the web. One of the problems with the SE updater is that it is a torrent server. ISPs (like Rogers) can not stop your service for using torrents, but will pause the service for a fraction of a second to reset the torrents connections making it a pain in the @$$ to download anything fast. (yes this also means it you have a torrent program open when playing FFXIV you will DC quite often). It was an odd move for SE to set up the updates with a torrent base, but heay... wait two hours after the update has come out, and you can download it from megaupload and other "share" sites.

Hope this helps :3
