In theory there's a blast moogle SOMEWHERE that tells you how to beat up that bloody tree. I'm hunting for it now. :P

Okay, here's how the event seems to be going:

In each nation, the Xmas tree goes Treant, and you have to /cheer it constantly until it returns to its spot. You then talk to the Smilebringer, who tells you there's a fake Smilebringer spreading strange gifts around. Find the NPC in the same area with a hat, but NO robe. That's the fake (it will change now and then). After that, talk to the smilebringer again, and he'll give you an event item. Following Event custom, you probably layout it at your MH, wait a few nights, and get a gift. I'm told it's the robe, but I don't know for certain what you get as of yet.

And you can still give presents to kiddies, but you only get the one a ame day version. No present sellers around, oddly enough...

Fireworks work like presents.

Yup, figured that out later. Also, to get the fancy items.:

Dream hat +1: buy the Dream hat, wear it, enjoy it, spread joy in it. Make sure you have at least one tree (maybe two) and eventually you'll get the +1 as a present in a day or so.

Dream Robe +1: If you don't already have one of the versions, repeating the treant event will nab you one of these instead of a furniture piece. It seems you don't need to shift nations, but I'm unsure on that. After getting the dream robe +1, you start getting the popstars.

Other things.

Apparently, the furniture items will result in candy canes, possibly candy rings (might be typo fluke), and dead, cooked fowl, ending up in your MH. Any new items are unconfirmed at this time, but I've heard of a miracle wand or something like that possibly existing (if you continue with the new item per event theme).

I can confirm that you will get a Roast Turkey from the dream platter(sandy) and a candycane from the dream stocking (windy).
I have no idea what they do, I just stuck them in storage :P

I got the roast turkey 1 day after obtaining all three furniture items (and putting them in layout in my mog house) and the candycane the day after that... waiting to see what the dream coffer produces :)

Also, getting your "festive fame" up by giving gifts to the children enables you to free port (from the smilebringer) to any of the 3 main nations any time you want!!!
note: the more you port with this method, the lower your fame gets. simply trade more gifts to kids to get it back up again :)

In case things aren't working out for you, here's what's "Festive" in my mog house....

Sandy tree from Starlight past
Dream platter (sandy)
Dream Stocking (windy)
Dream Coffer (bastok)

I had the Dream Hat +1 & Dream Robe from Starlight past...
I traded 2 or 3 gifts to kids, {/cheer}-ed the trent maybe 3-4 times and got the Dream Robe +1

:? got pudding from my dream stocking today...
that makes 2 roast turkey (dream platter) & three cakes (dream coffer)
I wonder if moogle stops giving me things after the festival is over...
AND I wonder, what are the effects of these food items?

Did you get a black pudding?

I <3'd black puddings when I was in the mid-60s. Grrreat mage food. Just hafta becareful because its an AoE food effect.

Anyway, according to the event guide on FFXIclopedia possible rewards include:

Candy Cane -(Any city; after placing the Dream Stocking in Mog House Layout; wait until next Earth day after placing the Dream Stocking in your Mog House Layout; may be a reward related to giving presents to the children)

Candy Ring -(after placing Dream Coffer in Mog House Layout)

Buche au Chocolat -(Any city; after placing the Dream Platter in your Mog House Layout and waiting one Earth day)

Roast Turkey-(Any city; after placing the San d'Orian Tree (any tree may work) and Dream Platter in Mog House Layout; wait until next Earth day; multiple turkeys can be obtained in successive days)

Gateau aux Fraises -(Any city; after placing the Dream Coffer in your Mog House Layout; wait until next earth day)

Serving of Black Pudding - (Any city; after placing the Dream Stocking in your Mog House Layout; wait until next Earth day)
