Connection problems with POL? What ISP??

Hiya,

I won't make this a poll because I have no clue on what ISPs there are in this world. (there are over 100 in Holland and Belgium alone)
I've come to notice on several forums (Allakhazam,Killingifrit, etc) and ingame that a lot of people have connection problems or suddenly D/C.
I have noticed that most of the D/Cers ingame have Comcast as ISP.
I hear everyone on forums complain about SE and connection problems.
It's true that SE had problems with (ex) gilsellers DDoSing their servers,
but that is in my eyes not the main problem.

I live in Holland and used to connect through Cable (UPC/Chello),
now I connect through ADSL (Planet internet) through a wireless connection (Shared with 2 other people) and frankly I rarely have any problems connecting or staying online.

The only problem I might have is getting R0 for a sec while walking through congested areas like lower Jueno.

What I like to know is do you have problems often or not, and which ISP do you use?

Everybody points their fingers at SE, but is it really they who are to blame?

Yeah Comcast for me. I almost have problems regulary. A year and a half ago when I fisrt started playing I actually never D/Ced. Recently I found one issue with my Linksys router and found the firmware version was faulty or didn't work well enough for online games. So I fixed that but the problems I now have every once in a while, is not even being able to connect to POL and sometimes the game randomly crashes abrubtly with an error message. I don't take the time to read them enough though.

Simply put, Comcast sucks, and there were some really retarded problems that they have had. Ontop of that I don't see why more switch to DSL which is far cheaper and just as fast. When I do connection speed tests online I don't get 6mb downstream like Comcast continually advertises even though Cable is shared it should be faster than 1.5-2.0 mbs Dirty liers >_>

I've never really had any problems with my road runner (cable) before other than a disconnect once in awhile. :)

Though the frequency of disconnects could change now that I moved and have a new IPS provider...

Comcast......

When it is bad, I can't get on for hours. Or I R 0 as soon as I get in. I have spent 15 mins trying to get out of the darrrned Mog house.

Scary. R 0 in a party......

But it isn't at all bad most of the time.

Comcast

I don't get R0, I get instant "Lost connection with server", and then POL-0011 until it clears up. It's not lagging out, it's completely cut off, usually for about 10 minutes.

I thought it was my laptop, so I tried the PS2 last time this happened, and had the same problem. I was working on a CoP mission, and the blm (I was rdm) would D/C at the exact same times and be gone almost exactly the same amount of time.

It had to be Square Enix. I don't know why, but fortunately it hasn't happened in a while. It was always late at night though, and I've been trying to get a normal sleep schedule again.

Comcast too. Dad works there, we know what the problem is.

Unlike pretty much every ISP in the world, Comcast uses only one DNS server. This is horrible for online games because if for some reason the DNS server goes down, there's no backup server for everyone to go on instead. So instead of switching to some other server, we have to wait for them to fix the current one. Which often takes a very long time.

I dont think i'll pick comcast as my ISP when i go out into the big world

I use Qwest DSL and the only problems I get I have confirmed are caused by my router (thats no problems with qwest POL or my DSL modem) since min October 2004, until then I would DC about once every hour. (I got the game in mid September 2004.

i get the same problem as firemyst saying where pretty close and on comcast i think it has to do with SE blocking ip ranges to try and pinpoint the ddos attacks maybe..

One server!? O.o Might I say that is disgusting for an ISP. If it goes down constantly then I would think they would want more. Though I've noticed on my router there are two IP adresses for DNS servers, so I figure there are two but it is probably different for different regions of the country. I can only recall one time when the DNS server went down and I could not browse webpages, though I think we I was still able to play online games since you usually connect through those with IP adresses and not domain names. So I do not think that DNS servers are exactly the cause, though I may be wrong.

 only one DNS?
If I may be so bold, for how many customers? (I might be asking for clasified info, if so do not answer)
Anyway only one DNS for an ISP is way too little.
But on the other side it's a lot clearer to me now why especiaslly Comcast customers have a lot of problems staying connected.

As far as some people might think, it's not that SE is being bombarded with DDoS attacks all the time.
These ususally happen after big updates when SE has banned a # of em gilliez.
It lasts for a few days and then it's over until the next big ban.

The thing that angers me about it is that SE only bans the silent gilsellers you never hear from.
Making gil crafting and stuff, while the gilsellers that got into sky, monopolyze NMs like Serket and Behemoth and MPK everyone in their path are still running around with 100+ complaints and GM calls on them -_-.
I got my revenge on them tho :2thumb:

Take a closer look(I may be wrong but this is how it's set up on mine). It has one for the main and one for the backup. But the backup shows as the same one.

could be couple things ~.~
I dont get d/c often anymore since SE & ISP connection is good now..

couple weeks ago.. SE& Certain ISP were having trouble connecting.
Also... could be DDoS.. but who knows if they just putting up the excuse.

though.. I get instant R0.. not instant but a lot of times i get r0.
Reason could be many...
I heard if your cable or phone line could be dmged then packet getting loss..
you get r0...
In this case you can simply call the ISP and check your line and see if its ok or not..

next thing could be MODEM and ROUTER.
In my case.. I own Linksys BEFSR41 and Ive heard many gamers having trouble using this router... instantly packet loss...
if you own this piece of junk.. throw it away and get a new 1.
