What program are you using, Toren? If it's Adobe Photoshop just select the area you want to keep and go up to Edit I think, then hit crop. If you don't have PS, you are out of luck.
...Just kidding :) Most graphics programs (save MS Paint) have a functioning crop tool (usually in the Edit menu). If you can't get ahold of PS, search Google for a program called IfranView. It's a freeware image viewer/editor with lots of neat tools and effects, including of course, a crop tool.

Easiest wasy is to just select the area you want with a selection wand, copy it, and paste it as a new image.

That's fine for some things...I usually use the GIMP to create avatars. It has a cropping tool that allows you to select a area and get it exactly square. I assume that most image editors that are not MS Paint (including Irfanview and Photoshop) have a smilar tool.

not sure it it's of much help here.. but photoshop has a magnetic lasso tool that selects a specific area. Like, it can "smart-crop" around images to take a charecter away from a background, if that's what you mean..

If you're looking for simple resize and cropping ACDSee image viewer has this built in. At work I use a combination of MS Paint and The Gimp for my image editing needs (which aren't that great, usually just screen shots).
