You can thank the FFXI community for that article. We spammed the hell out of CGWs marketing department until they removed their IGE adds from their magazine. After they did I talked to the editor, Jeff Green and told him it would be a good idea to do an undercover article on it since many of the other gaming mags won't touch the subject with a 10' pole. I gave him some resources as well as several other people on Allakhazam to aid in his research. A victory for the little guy for once...

Blizzard creates gold, gives it to money sellers, and then gets a cut of the real money.

no reason for there to be sweatshops to make gold

With all the market manipulation that is being done in online gamming, how long before there is a market crash of '29 on the WOW servers. Will level 80 Dwarfs be jumping off cliffs because they just can't take it anymore? Will Blizzard have to set up a FDIC to protect player's assets?

If this happens on FFXI will the Elvaan kick out their Elvaan King and replace him with a Franklin Elvaano Rosevelt who will start public work projects to plant some damn shelter belts in Gustberg and build some damn bridges and create the "Advernturer Work Program". Will the river flowing through East Ronfaure be damned up to make way for a hydroelectric plant called the Trion Dam? Will we have to sit through Fireside Linkshell Chats everynight? Will there be a mass migration of miners and Harvestors to Kuzot because there is work to be had there?

Time will tell.....

Marvelous article.

It gave the facts and only the facts, and left out all the moral and or outright false bs.

IGE president Steve Salyer wrote:We don't farm assets, nor do we endorse any type of cheating or abusive farming practices. IGE is leading the way in efforts to help prevent these abuses. We spend a lot of time speaking with sellers and educating people involved in the secondary market. IGE is against abusive farming practices wherever they are taking place.
[Start sarcasm] Oh wow ... such a humanitarian he is. It's good to know that honest people like Steve-o up there is looking out for us. What would we do without his stalwart example? To think of a game without his company’s watchful vigilance and honest practices.
/em raises her “God Bless IGE” flag. [/end sarcasm]

I did enjoy the fact that the article was non-bias on the issue; hard to find these days. I'm a bigot though. :P

Yep I <3 CGW. It's a great gaming magazine. If they game is trash, they call it as such lol. There is no hype in that magazine.

Having read the article....

Having read the article, there is a bias there, just not as strong and as in your face as many of the people who have passions about RMT.

Having re-read it just now, there is a huge bias here. Lots of inflammatory phrases such as

"Caldwell sold that in-game tender online for a handsome real-world profit while only paying his employees pennies on the dollar."
- "handsome" and "pennies on the dollar" are persuasive words that show bias....

Sack's typical 12-hour sessions can earn his employers as much as $60,000 per month while he walks away with a measly $150.
- Contrasting the pay with words such as "as much as" and "measly" show bias.

I could go on....

Please, read critically. We're all somewhat educated.

In any case, the only way this industry is going to be stopped is to eliminate the demand, it seems. Third-world countries appear to be the breeding ground of many products that we here would consider illegal or immoral, such as counterfeit movies and counterfeit software, etc. Yet, we here in the first world still pay our hard-earned money to do it, so they will keep producing it.

If you think sweatshops are horrible, and you would never knowingly buy something made in one, then I suggest you unplug your computer, take your shirt off your back, and those Nike's off your feet. That's all this is. Another industry where people are willing to buy their products.

Oh please, using those words to show the contrast between the wage discrepancy is hardly bias. If they didn't disclose the numbers and just said "tons or mountains of cash" then it would be bias. But they did disclose the numbers. You could argue that the wording is maybe slanted but bias? No.

Also in the end of the article they wrote, "However, they are underpaid, or as Smooth Criminal puts it, "They get paid dirt. But dirt is good where they live.""

Wouldn't that be a counter agruement to their previous comments? Did you read the entire article?

The way I see it their just adjectives describing the mood of the article...its not like you could re-word the entire article as to not offend even the smallest percentage...

Yes, I did read the entire article, but that's not my point.

Just because the article happens to agree with you, does not make it non-biased. Let's be real.

The entire article could be rewritten taking out the adjectives, and would read factually the same, but with far less bias.

Your argument about "tons or mountains" of cash only go to scope or level of bias, not whether there is one.

According to your logic then every article/printing has bias. Point out what areas you consider bias, because I just don't see it.

I have yet to see an article that didnt have bias.

Bias sells. Like minded people gathering together and all.
but then again, it also helps seperate.

bottom line is, unless the media is on our side, people claim gil selling improves economies and increases player growth, bull. some n00b buying gil to lvl a job he cant play right, doesnt make me want to stay, but leave. but meh, no one will ever see the real evils of RMT

What disturbs me is that gil selling is more profitable than the monthly fees that SE collects to run the game in the first place.

To me, that's just a giant red flag that screams "something is wrong with this picture."

Not quite true, the values they are listed are a culmination of numerous games, hardly the trade in one alone.

Thanks Prrsha. It is kind of a pity that a gamer's magazine, staffed and writen by devout gamers, had to be led by the nose to do this article, but I am happy they finaly did it.

Read the article in the print magazine. Remember print magazines? They still exist. :D
