I can't say much about Beastmaster but I'm a 59 Red Mage.

On the positive side:
--Rdm is one of the best solo classes later in the game.

--You'll have a lot of flexibility in parties early on and you'll be able to switch between healing, support magic, and meleeing.

--Sneak/invis and subbing blm for warp will make quests and missions a lot easier.

--You'll get a lot of party invites after level 41.

--AF3 is a really pimpin' hat.

The downside to rdm is:
--Once you learn Refresh at level 41, exp parties become very repetitive and most parties will ask you not to melee.

--You'll want to level as many as 5 sub jobs (blm, whm, smn, nin, brd)

--Before level 41, you'll be known as "that other kind of mage" and will be picked last for parties behind whm's and blm's.
75 rdm
62 cor, 50 blm, 38 whm
37 pld, 37 rng, 37 nin, 37 brd, 37 smn, 37 drk

I agree with Poge ( myself being a 55 red mage) that rdm is the most flexible job at later lvls, and is fun and hard work in a pt.

Beastmaster is a good solo job and is a refreshing change from other jobs in wich you have to pt in order to get the best out of it, and its always cool to go out and tame a wild beast and make it fight other monsters ^^
Bad side is, almost no pt will let a bst join them due to exp loss from having a pet and the danger that the pet can betray you and attck the pt.

So its up to you what you want to do in this game. My suggestion is, do whats fun for you and what you enjoy^^

kinda hard to list that as a positive when comparing to THE best solo class in the game.

The best part about RDM for me is it changes.

All the other jobs just evolve. Whatever they do in parties at 10 - 20, they will do forever. They get bigger and badder at it, but at 75 they are still doing it.

Change is not necessarly wonderful, at 52 I do miss meleeing. Maybe one party of three I can melee sometimes, some targets. The best parties for it, I am in maybe 3/5 of the combats. 5 or 6 of those since 41.

It is not a matter of they won't let me, it is I don't have time for Meleeing. Refreshing me and two other mages + debuffs & Dispell and I have the time for melee IF the target lasts long enough. Add a PLD, and I have no time.

RDMs are not picked third unless there is a surplus of WHMs. All parties need a healer, and often you will be it. Prepare for this by having a fully leveled WHM sub.

As long as you have WHM leveled go try BST. Can't hurt.

I have heard that the EXP penailty only hurts the BST in parties. I have only ever been in one party with a BST, in the jungle. As he used jugged pets no one had any EXP loss. The party just rocked.

Bst misconceptions. A Pet you charm will -always- penalize the Bst a very small portion of exp. And it will -only- penalize the party if it is a higher level then the highest level person in the party.

Example. If the party spread is 13-15, and the monster is lvl 14, no exp penalty except to the beastmaster. Monster is lvl 16 though, everyone gets that penalty. The main problem with this is if the monster is low level compared to the party, it's like asking the Whm to engage. Crap damage. And if it's high enough level to do appreciable damage, it may penalize the parties.

Or at least, this has been the results of my research.
In the end, I'm just talking out of my ass. So take it all with a grain of salt.

I can't stand any party that won't allow people who want to melee to engage. When I leveled my Elvaan WHM, I always meleed. I didn't care what anyone else said, mostly because I was the leader on pretty much every occasion, but also because I knew I could do my job well and still skill-up my Staff and Club skills. There's no reason not to allow melee, especially for RDM, since they'd do more damage than any other mage. And since spell-casting takes precedence over melee, you're not losing any time casting spells by swinging. The only downside is AOE attacks, but most of the time those are so few and far between that you can still recover and keep doing your job. (Especially WHM after 25 with Auto-Regen. It's not fast, but always gaining HP is a good thing.)

So anyway, if you really like to melee, I wouldn't let someone tell you not too unless you are just going to die a lot doing it. It's your game too, you know. ;)

even if there isn't a charmable mob you can use a jug pet, they are pretty weak but I was a pt before where if you added the damage from my carrie and me then I outdamaged by the blm nearly 200 dmg each fight. The blm was doing about 1500 dmg a fight, I was doing 1100 and the carrie was doing around 600 dmg.

The problem with mages meleeing is not the danger they put themselves in, nor is it any hate they may generate by doing so. Any competent mage has a feel for where the hate levels are. The problem is as you poke the mob for <10 damage, that mob is gaining just as much TP as when the DRK cleaves it with his scythe. This is very bad when you fight things that have powerful special attacks like goblins, bats, pugs, spiders and cockatrices to name a few. With them doing their special attacks at such an alarming rate, the PLD and WHM will kill you if you engage in melee. You want your skill ups? When I think of Rdm I think of the saying "Jack of all trades, Master of none." They are the most well rounded job in the game, but that obviously has its setbacks as well.

I would rather not have to rely on my subjob for things too much.
It is true that after you get Refresh, you become a refrech whore in pts. I know some ppl get tired of the whining and demands for refresh. I main a Blm and at 48, I have not asked for Refresh once in a pt.

I guess one bad side is that once you reach a certain level, ppl expect you to have certain spells or not invite you.. that goes double for Rdm. I have not played Rdm, but what I have heard it's not easy to play because they don't really have a niche of their own.. besides a few spells.

On the flip side, I have not seen many high lvl Bst. Mithra in Bst AF also looks sexy.. like it was made for us.

Um, no. If I want to melee, I will. If the party doesn't like it, they can find another WHM... maybe. ;)

Yeah, that's the thing about being a Whm. Nine times out of ten, you pretty much have the party by the balls. If you leave, they are screwed.
