Brain complexity =/= just to size, but surface aera as well. That's why we have all those folds in our cortexes.*

I don't think the elephant's brain size is a function of motor control. That goes by muscle count, not muscle size. OK, their trunk has more muscles than our hands, but still.....

Elephants have good senses of touch, smell, and hearing. They comunicate at low frequencies, and quite complexly. All of this calls for added brain mass.

We are learing how the brains of different spices are hardwired for different functions, and how specalists in one sense devote a disproportunate amount of their brain to that sense. I read an article in Scientific American on how bat's brains are wired to decode Sonar. At the end they mentioned the disproportunate investment is senses in a few other spices. Dogs and Sharks, smell. (The Shark uses ovar 60% of its brain mass for smell BTW.) Cats and Owls, vision. Primates, touch. And despite our massive frontal lobes, we are the most sensitive of the Primates when it comes to touch.

This led to a flash of instant understanding, an epiphany if you like. I realized that is we ever do find a space traveling race, they will be tool users, and specalists in touch just as we are.

* Scientists have recently produces mice with hunam like folds in their cortexes by splicing Human genes into them. They had yet to run rodent IQ tests on them in the report I have read.

Of course with bigger better brains comes cooling requirements. You see the human brain uses up a whole lot of energy, quite a signifigant portion compared to the rest of the body. With more energy expended more heat is generated. All that extra heat has to go somewhere!!! So in that respect and appything this to Vana'diel we could say the Elvaan and the Taru have big old honking ears to act as radiators to draw heat away from the brain!!! The advantage in hearing could only be a seconday advantage.

But you have no noses at all. I swear that therrre isn't another inteligent rrrace on the planet who could smell a Goblin frrrom 5 ilims away. The Taru are only a little better than humes, and I don't think a Galka could trrrack by scent eitherrr. Cerrrtainly not one who grrrew up in Bastok anyway. Well OK, I have met a few Temple Knights that even a Hume could trrrack that way. What is therrre about this lack of bathing is holyness thing anyway?

^ No noses? We Elvaans have noses and they are pretty sensitive, if they weren't the Kingdom of San d'Oria woild smell like stinky old Bastock. Just because we don't have huge snouts doesn't mean we have a miserable smelling ability. While we may not smell as good as a mithran who can track a rarab across the whole of Vana'diel we can still smell better and smell better than those Galkan infested Humes.

I think what baketsu means is that the elvaan smell better because they bathe more often...

If Vana'diel is a future version of the Earth, how did everyone forget about this era? what happened to all the advanced technology, especially if some of this technology, for example genetic engineering, was used to create this new version of the world?
For that matter, how were things like magic brought into existence? Was it always there, and we just don't know it? Is magic a product of technology? After all, someone once said, "Any sufficently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" or something like that... For that matter, how did all the monsters come into being? Are they also products of genetic engineering? And what about chocobos?
If it were "genetic cosplay run amok", wouldn't that method produce a lot more variation? I mean, there have got to be a lot more things that people would want to emulate.
As for the "alternate earth" theory, i wonder.. if the other worlds are video games in this world, what is this world to the other ones?
A lot of people expressed interest in wanting to go to one of these "other worlds", and one person said, "Why oh why cannot there be RL mithrrra." I would like to say I completely agree.. ^^
One person said, "Why can't we just move to Vanad'iel [sic] and live there?" Well, it's easy to see why this is not possible.. but I have an idea that's almost as good. If we can't go somewhere else, we should make this world as awesome as we can. Ask yourself: What is the reason Vana'diel is so great? and do your part to make something like that happen in this world. Ok, so maybe we can't do anything about there not being Mithra... but there really is a lot we can do, let's try to do our part. ^^
Something that may or may not be related to these issues: I am currently trying to do the summoner quest in real life, but due to the fact that I am decidedly anonymous (I refuse to let most people know I exist) if I ever do complete the quest, i won't get to summon anything other than carbuncle ; ; I would like to know where to find dust storms, if anyone knows please tell me ^^

I always thought it would be cool for a Final Fantasy game to take place in either a ringworld or a super-jupiter....

Yeah, the idea of a VR world is pretty interesting. ^^ Would the people in this world know that it's VR? If so, why would they accept that? Maybe the real world is too polluted to live in, so the people resorted to VR...Or maybe it's just a game to them. With this theory, the line between us and video game characters begins to blur... Would the game itself (the one that we play) take place partially in the real world? Maybe our world is a game like this...you never know.

Or maybe they don't know. If so, then how did they get there? Was it some kind of experiment, put a bunch of people in a simulated world and see how they react? Maybe someone was trying to create a new culture.
I read a book once, where they raised some children in a virtual world, and let them out when they were grown-up, and they had no idea what the real world was supposed to be like...To put this in a FFXI context, they might assume, for example, that death was not a cause for concern. This might get them in a lot of trouble... Or they might assume that there was such a thing as Mithra, and be disappointed when there isn't. Hey, if we're disappointed about that, someone who thought there was would have it a lot worse. :P

This brings me to something I've wanted to mention for some time: What if we could play FFXI (or anything else, for that matter) in VR? I don't even know where to start! There is too much awesomeness to fit here! Just imagine... We could know what it is really like to be a Mithra! :D We could harness the power of magic and the elements! Reminds me of a quote that explained why magic is awesome. "With a thought, we can become invisible, set enemies on fire, or raise the dead." Ok, so it was me that originally said it (I forget where), but still, it's cool-sounding!

Still, there are some things in the game that might not translate well into VR... Just one random example out of many: What is the reason you can't wear, for example, Scale Mail at level 1? How could it be physically impossible? Perhaps it's physically possible, but you don't get any benefits. You gotta wonder, though, how could you be wearing heavy armor and not be protected...? Maybe you're not trained in its proper use. This would mostly have the effect of reducing maneuverability; it might be a good solution, but one that would change the game substantially. Then again, SE changes the game substantially all the time...<.<

Would VR players be able to interact with people on PC or PS2? This raises a few questions. Would speech be translated into text and vice versa? I hear there are some cell phones on the market that can do this. These cell phones, however, have an exceedingly high error rate, and you have to talk slowly. Perhaps passable for chatting, though not quite good enough for hastily yelling, "VOKE! VOKE!" in the middle of battle. :P

Heh, I could talk about this for hours...but I guess I'm going to have to wrap it up. :( Thanks for reviving this topic it's awesome! :D Sorry for the long post.. (as I said, I have so much to say) I hope you respond. ^^

^ Interesting Take... VR could be an interesting, an even more interesting thing would be direct wired brain communication like the (gawd i hare saying this: The Matrix) or maybe somethign like Ghost in the Shell type computers. I think VR users would be shielded from many of the real life elements that we have to deal with like death and Taxes(except in Jeuno).

One major nit I have to pick with things like the Matrix is the whole "If you die inside the matrix you die in real life". That seems like a bunch of hooey, they seem to make think that if you think you are are about to die you will die, what about people in real life who have jumped infrom of a truck or off a building and somehow miracoulosly survived, shouldn't they be dead anyways because "the expected to die"... Now I am not saying Dieing in game world would not have consequences, you would probably get a form of Post Traumatic Stress, but that would be the extent of it.

OK i just joined saw this and i def want to put my 2 cents in

after reading all posts @.@; very interesting heh ive though of this

mithras were born from a wave of Splicing though the only versions that actualy survived the change were feline versions... Galkas were mutation from the orginal splicing while it was imperfected ... taru would have been of a diff breed and probly just drank way way to much coffee so it stuck or were later discovered to have mutated from some animal that was douced in toxic waist , elvaans are humes that seemed to change over time from exposure to radiation or something as for chocobos i think that they were trying to make a new riding animal but some nut mixed chicken dna with an ostrage(sp?) and 2 diff variations came out. A chocobos and B the yagudo , the quadav(sp?) were also a result of toxic dumping and orcs could have evolved/mutated from kimodo(sp?) dragons (or would that be galka?).. the world of vanadiel and its continent could have been the shifting of the continents and a majority of it is now under water or undiscovered (like in that movie water world). Now as for magic i could be an enhanced form of Chi or energy (moving things with you mind and such) .. as for the {sky} areas that could be old tech that was left behind...
ill leave it at that for now ^^; great topic btw ^^
