What? Our President break Geneva Convention laws???? Oh perish the very thought.

While I was traveling in Europe a Dutchman tried to explain the why of Euro nationals not liking the citizens of some other country.

"They mostly dislike the people of the last country that ruled theirs" he said. "Except for the French No one likes the French. Even the French don't like the French."

All this reminds me of an old Cold War joke an NCO of mine used to tell.

Two spies from Russia are tasked to follow an American, but they don't know what he looks like. So, they're standing outside a bar in Europe somewhere waiting and the younger (and less experienced) spy asks the veteran how they will know which man to follow?

Veteran Spy>> By the way they walk.
New guy>> What do you mean?
Veteran Spy>> Wait.

One guy leaves the bar.

New guy >> Him?
Vet>> No. He's British. He walks like he owns the world.

Another guy leaves the bar.

New Guy >> Him?
Vet>> Nyet, French.
New Guy>> How do you know?
Vet>> He walks like he should own the world.

Another guy leaves the bar.

NG>> Him??
Vet>> Yes. That's the American.

So they start following him. The confused new guy asks quietly how his partner knew.

Vet Spy>> Americans walk like they don't know who you are or what you're doing, but you'd better get the Hell out of their way while you're doing it.

The french are a lot like sorority girls. They're a lot of fun and really nice one on one, but if you get them all together, they're snooty as hell.

BTW, in general, I think Parisians are the ones that give the french such bad press. Much the same way the stereotypical Texan tourist does for America; ie. "OMG, Mabel, there are so many durn furriners in france!?" They really exist, too. I thought they were just a joke until I did a bit of travelling.

What's funny is that if you say "I'm from America" you get a totally different reaction than if you say "I'm from California". People like Californians. My brother actually got asked for his autograph twice in Kazakstan. He's not famous or anything. The two russian friends he was with couldn't explain why it was happening, either. He'd say "Amerikanski -- California", though, which might have been part of it.

I'm just messing with Sug because I do know people who love to boast about how superior the US is compared to other nations and are convinced that the US is the greatest country in the history of mankind.

Yeah, we're not so great. Our nation was founded by a group of religious zealots who were ran out of Britain who then went on to slaughter the native people, used slave labor, fought in a war when a group of states tried to form their own nation, arrived late to not one, but two global conflicts then we claimed that we were the reason sh*t got under control, created the most destructive weapons ever known, used them twice, then got paranoid and freaked out because a new form of government broke out, funded radicals and militants to fight our "enemy" then ten years later we end up fighting the very same radicals and militants, and now we're involved in a war we created while all the while ignoring two real threats from people who can only be described as "Pure evil" and all the while we act as the moral police for the world.

I know I missed some stuff and some parts were really oversimplified but I feel that pretty much sums up most of what the US has done wrong in its history.

Like Al Franken said, some people love their country like a five-year-old loves a parent; basically "My country is great and never makes a mistake ever. Oh, and don't ever say anything bad about my country." Whereas others love their country like an adult loves another adult; "My country has flaws and while I don't agree with everything the leadership does I still love my country."

The "five-year-old" people I refer to are the ones who, more often than not, have an American Flag painted on the rear window of their pickup and have one of those "Kid pissing on Osama bin Laden" stickers on the tailgate. They're the ones who throw out the arguments like what I used earlier (In fact, when I fell like being a total ass in political discussions they serve as my muse) and there's no way you can have a real, honest political discussion with them. Hell, they'll even deny that we supplied bin Laden and Hussein with weapons during the Cold War and if you bring up any evidence to back that up they call you "Un-American!"

My favorite moment ever was at a anti-gay rally down at the Capitol building here in Sacramento. If I remember correctly, they were either protesting because the mayor of San Francisco was marrying same-sex couples or the amendment to the state constitution to recognize civil unions. A guy I knew in high school and I went down there to see if we could get on the news (If we did we were going to promote an upcoming show for his band during one of the live segments) and there was a guy there we got into a discussion with. Everyone in Sacramento knows him. He drives a small motorhome covered with anti-abortion and anti-gay propaganda all over the city. He's even been cited by the police for illegally parking it at which point he causes a scene, alerts the media, then bitches about how Sac PD is violating his first amendment right to free speech by threatening to tow his vehicle unless he moves it or, in some cases, feeds the meter. Anyways, my friend (Roman Catholic) gets into a theological discussion with this guy over the "God hates fags" sign he's carrying (Right now Sugami's thinking "Why does God hate cigarettes?") and in the middle of our discussion the guy goes into this anti-semitic rant. My friend says "Jesus was Jewish and the Old Testament is pretty much owned by the Jews. All Christians really hold claim to is the New Testament" to which the guy countered "Jesus Christ is GOD!" which is how a child would end an argument they were losing. See, the sheer stupidity of what he said dumbfounded my friend who walked away confused, wondering what the hell "Jesus Christ is GOD!" has to do with anything we discussed.

Hmph I was half joking anyways. The old "We saved your ass in WW2." line is just like FFXI's version of "lolDRG", wildly inaccurate and gets more annoying the more you hear it :P

Hehe have a point, kinda. Dropping a nuke is the worst violation though and would probably be a last ditch resort if anything.

 Yeah the French hate everyone and everyone hates the French. Countries mostly hate their neighbours just for the sake of them being their neighbours. English "hate" the Irish, Welsh and Scottish the same way you yanks always seem to make fun of the Canadians :P

Speaking of russian spies, an ex-KGB operative said the British have the best spies in the world ;) was on the news a bit back :P

In actual point of fact, our president has changed the military rules of engagement to allow tactical nukes. We are developing the tactical nukes to use under these rules. Analyists outside the military estimate these to be in the 20 - 50 KT range. The ones we used in WWII were ~ 30 KT.

I have mentioned this here before.

Nukes are more a deterrent than anything else, if one drops then everyone will start doing it and there won't be much of the Earth left afterwards

Don't see anything "tactical" about it...

Nukes are like when you and your family are on a road trip and you fight with a sibling and your dad says if you don't stop fighting he's gonna turn the car around. You know its not going to happen but you comply just to be safe.

Yeah, but in my situation we don't have a crazed neighbor in the car who will overtake the steering wheel and turn the car around.

In the Nukes situation, we have Iran and North Korea who are crazy enough to actually use nukes, consequences be damned.

That was the point I was trying to make originally and I must have been distracted and...Ooh, shiny!

*Plays with the shiny*

What was I saying?
