Yuk... AMD is crap. I had a Intel setup that lasted for years. I put together 5 AMD systems before I got one that has carried me for the same amount of time, but it runs almost 2x hotter than my Intel system ever did. I'd steer clear of it if I were you. The next system I put together will be Intel.

MHz/GHz contributes to performance more than it seems has been let on in this thread. You can't completely sacrifice cpu speed, but you don't necessarily need the highest you can get to have a fast system. 3.2GHz should be good enough for a couple of years. Motherboard... ASUS... nothing else. You'll want lots of RAM as well... I'd say at least 1GB, but more is better. Also, the faster the MHz on the RAM, the higher the data transfer rate will be, which does contribute to speed difference, if hardly noticable. Sounds like you have the hard drive part down. Also, don't skimp on cooling... keep your system cool and it'll be around for a long time. However, don't buy a full tower case thinking you're improving cooling... just get cable sleeves to improve airflow and keep cables tidy, and get a mid-tower. There's no need to get a full tower unless you're running a server with lots of hardware, and carrying a mid-tower will be much easier on you. (Trust me...

*agrees with Josiejo*

Intel processors are so much better then AMDs now and run much cooler. The less heat your system endures, the longer it will last. In all of the builds that I do for customers, I've had less problems and returns with Intel processors.

And never never skimp on cooling. Get a large case you and deck out all of the vents with fans. Make sure your memory cards are free of cords and have proper air flow. Most memory cards don't have any way to cool themselves other then the case airflow. Also make sure the slots around your graphics card are empty for maximum cooling.

The power supply of the case is very important as well. The newer graphics cards use up alot of power so make sure your power supply is adequate.

ooh my... you really have missed somthing... you are thinking about the old AMD which had ALOT (the K6 CPU's if i remember right) of problem with the heat... but now its vice versa.. Intel has big problem theese days with the heat... which is one fact why im changing to AMD, i have a Intel P4 now and the heat did bad things to the motherboard... thats why my computer chrashed totaly ;( i got it repaired and even the store, well atleast the technican that repaired my motherboard (400Kronor for that repairing >.< thats around 30-40dollar i think) doesnt recommend Intel anymore due their heat problem...

and besides that, ive had intel CPU for all my computers... and its not a bad thing to change it once and see yourself  maybe i will like AMD, maybe not, time change and so does the people..

I keep my system well-cooled so it's not like heat matters at all. I go with AMD because they are cheaper and offer higher performance. They are also wicked in the gaming arena.

In all of the latest builds that I have done, I've found that the newer AMD processors generate much more heat then the Pentium ones. Maybe you had a problem with your intel processor because it was a much older CPU?

no clue, but i dun think so  well, i know AMD have had alot of heat problem, but atleast ppl says that Intel have gotten them now also.. atleast the latest CPU's but, anyway, im not too sure how it is now, with difference suggestions like theese makes me "lost", some say Intel and some here says AMD is the heat bringer  im quite confused... lol :P

Well, it's kinda a rule tht the more you cram onto the die and the faster it's designed to run the more heat you'll generate. And AMD simply does more per cycle than an Intel does so it's understandably hotter. It's only a problem if you don't cool it.

I currently run an AMD Athalon XP 2100+ (I know .. kinda old) but my CPU temp stays about 90° and my case temp reads at ~72° .. I know know about hot .. but 70° is about room temperature in my house

oh yea .. I also have 2 80Gb hdds in a RAID0 :D

I hope to be upgrading soon to an AMD Athalon 64!

Well, it's kinda a rule that the more you cram onto the die and the faster it's designed to run the more heat you'll generate.
You know, for a long time the Front Side Bus speed of the Intel processors meant that they were the heat demons, and the AMDs ran cooler.

Also, shrinking the mask means more devices per square micrometer, but less power consumption, and therefore less heat. So much so that todays chips generate far less heat/watt consumed than the chips of only two generations ago.

The real rule is, The more power you put in, the more heat you get out. Look at the power demands of a few chips and you have a good idea of the realitive heat output of the chips.

But with the use of fans, the whole heat duscusion is almost moot.

Confirmed AMD user. Three machines from 2100 to 2800. Happy with all of them most of the time.

My best friend has a 64 bit AMD, and an AMD powered gaming notebook. Amusingly enough the notebook has the best graphic prossesor of all our machines.

I have plans to upgrade to an Athlon 64 3400+ in the coming weeks. I can't wait!

I'm torn between upgrading to about an Athlon 64 3200+, finding a IIDX ASC controller or buying a Mac mini.

I just want my refund check. ;)
