Project: Byakugan (Little brother's computer)

Post by Saradiart »

I give all my computers weird names o.o
At any rate, It's been awhile since I have compiled lists.

The budget for this system is $1000 and it is supposed to be designed as a gamer system for my little brother.

HOWEVER, I'm not very smart when it comes to choosing power supplies so perhaps there could have been a better option? Anyway, here is this list so far and I will be ordering everything from newegg.

Power supply should get you by, even if you choose to add another video card. Have heard that Corsair seems to be a solid choice in PSUs, Antec is another. Is the rig going to be gaming only? If so take a look at Raptor drives from WD. Only 150 GB, but also much faster then the standard 7200 drives. I only have a 75GB Raptor. I have FFXI, Guildwars, and all episodes of Limit Break Radio and Pet Food Alpha on the drive and I only use about 60% of the drive capacity. Down side to them is they are a bit more expensive.

Giving Computers a weird name is not a bad thing.

Cabling looks a lot better now though.
Also the retail CPU cooler has been replaced by a Zalman averaging my CPU temp from 24C to 18C.

Also my servers at work have names originating from Greek and Norwegian mythology.

Specs anyway (I'm at work so I owe you exact details if you want em):
Case: Cooler Master Cosmos 1000
PSU: Cooler master 640W Modular PSU
MB: Asus P5Q-pro
CPU: Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 2.4Ghz
MEM: Corsair 2x2GB DDR3
VGA: Asus EN9800GT TOP
HD: 2x WD 160GB SATA 7200 RPM in Raid-0
DVD: LG 24x SATA DVD+RW
Generic multi-cardreader.
Screens:
Benq 22"
Belinea 22"

Externally I also have a Toshiba 1TB USB Hard drive for my data.
The budget for this system is $1000 and it is supposed to be designed as a gamer system for my little brother.

That is quite a budget there, above rig cost me about the same in €.
Excluding the screens which I already had.

I'd say regarding PSU you've made a pretty solid choice.
The brand is good, the Wattage will last you a while and choosing a modular PSU absolutely helps cable management a lot!

The PSU looks solid enough. I saw the one on the case first and freaked out, and then I remembered that PSUs that come with cases are crap, and that nobody in their right mind would use it. I saw the case though and it's a tad flashy but i'll work fine.

Corsair is a good brand for stuff. I typically buy my memory from them.

Big concern is what I am getting for my price.
I have another build that is way cheaper, but it does not come with an operating system. But at least we will have the computer in.

I'd stick with the first power supply, now a days you don't want to drop below a 600w power supply.

For future upgrades yes, but it's good and it works for the price no?
Everything we have on that system should work fabulously under that power supply. Not sure about the GPU. By the time this gets old, it would be time to buy an entirely new system I would say. I'm going to bet they'll come out with new socket technology. They already came out with Core i7!

I would definitely stick to the Corsair power supply if I could, because I know it works.

Intel Core i7 should fit in the same socket as the current Core2 CPUs.

As for the GPU, should not worry about that one too muc.
Those are old when they roll out of the factory. :)

Don't laugh. I run Linux Debian "XANDROS" to be exact on my gaming pc with WineHQ to make windows compatable. My operating system opens up with a wolf howling and a cold wind blowing and my lovely retarded voice (via a voice modulator) "StormScape.... OX"

Ya.... I'm weird. Even weirder... my computer has the dual video card set up and the Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Here's the thing, my trainset is still set up here. and all the switch turnouts are controlled wirelessly with a USB Switch controller plug. It plugts into my switch boards which then has a wireless reciever it's wired into. Then the signal is run via the computer and a program I have called "Train Controller." I can program my switches to function at any time or point. Or I can use my sensors on the track to transmit the data to the automaton controls.

I'm a model train/computer geek. I'm going to go stand in the corner now :3
