Ever wonder what the limits are on NES Tetris?

Post by Keavy »

Basically the game begins using Boolean and Numeric logic to compute Lines and Levels when those limits have been exceeded. Score never goes past its max and near the end the blocks are virtually uncontrollable.

Ever wonder why in LoZ you could only carry 255 rupees? 8 Bit processors have a limit of 256 characters with zero as a character. A lot of other NES games do this, too. Earn enough lives in Super Mario Bros. and the numbers will change to letters then be replaced by symbols. Its also why 100 coins = a 1 up.

Its absolutely fascinating to hear programmers who worked in the NES/Master System heyday talk about how they worked around memory and processor restraints. Now we have developers able to make one copy of a game for all regions thanks to Blu-Ray.

Its amazing how far we've come in 25 years.

I think the only way to get that far is to have a computer do it

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, too. Like that guy who posted the video of "him" getting 100% on Buckethead's Jordan on Expert mode in GH2 before the game was even released on PS2. I've heard that even people who can play Jordan on a real guitar have trouble with the game!

Still, I think the reason the counter goes haywire past level 22 is that they never expected any human player to be able to get that far. Even in my prime I topped out at level 15.

Still, I find stuff like that absolutely fascinating. I've tried programming before in high school and I failed the class.

The class was entry level Boolean logic and I still wake up in a cold sweat thinking about the hours I spent writing programs based on the schematics the instructor handed out, entering the programs into the computer, and either having the thing not work, work to a point then fail, or getting the flashing eight's.

What was worse was when we came back from Christmas vacation and we were given a paper with an end result that we had to accomplish and then told to write a program to do it and draw a schematic of the program.

 <-- That was me.

Guitar Hero is like totally different to playing a guitar

When I was browsing Youtube looking at the guitar hero videos it always amused me when someone would say they could play the song on guitar but sucked at the game  two different skill-sets really.

Guitar Hero has 5 keys I think, a guitar has like 21 frets and 6 strings... hmm... to mention there being several different ways to play a single note but nevermind that.

Aso the percentages are rounded so it's entirely possible to get "100%" and miss a note or two. The only real way of getting 100% is to be a computer or "learn the song", which makes it a little closer to playing the guitar
