Looks neat at least. Big IF in my opinion as to if they will be able to pull this off. But at least it is nice to see some of the idea's behind the PS3 coming to light.

They seem to mention "downloadable content" a lot, I'm putting good money on it costing a bit for every extra thing you download.

That is a given, since they have been talking about micro transactions for years.

same concept as Free MMORPG, game is free but everything costs you a bit, ends up being about the same.

Some people are wondering if Sony products will come with codes that allow your "Home" to have the same item. For example, you buy a new Sony TV or computer and you get that item for free in your "Home."

As for how long it'll be before porn and Torrented movies will be screened by users on Home I, myself, have money on milliseconds after the beta goes live.

Is anyone thinking SecondLife version 2.0 here?
In the end, I'm just talking out of my ass. So take it all with a grain of salt.

Ya, definatly looks like it...

I wasn't too hot for SecondLife or OzWorld myself. This looks strangely like rip-offs of those. Heck, anyone else remember CyberTown? That had to be one of the first ones for 3d chat and bs sessions.

Best news out of all this is that you're not required to use Home.

Although, with the PS3's 256 MB of RAM can it really run this, its OS, and a multiplayer game all at the same time?

IF it can I bet it would do that using Mac OS's VRAM* trick. Which works great, just as long as you're not constantly switching programs. Like right now, I'm on the internet with iTunes running and everything is working fine. The more stuff I start running, the longer it takes me to switch from active program to active program as my RAM fills up and it switches over to VRAM.

* There's a 2GB partition on my HDD that is used for "VRAM." Pretty nifty trick, although its slow and more often than not it forgets to clear itself out so that's a pain. I hear with the newer and faster HDD's it works a lot better.

windows uses VRAM too, mine's also set at 2GB, but windows scales it as necessary, the max is set at 4 GB. it won't let me use less than 2 MB for VRAM even though I have plenty of regular DDR RAM (1.5 GB)

On a more serious note, something I pondered for a bit. Between Home and Little Big World one wonders what Sony is attempting to do. Now to Those of us who are primarly PC gamers or MMO players in general, Home does not seem that big of a deal. Little big world while amusing likewise does not seem all that to a regular PC user. However when one steps back and realizes we are by far not Sony's target audience, then the picture becomes a little more clear.

What Sony is attempting to do here is bring the "Second Life" virtual world concept mainstream. They are attempting to package it in a manner that everyone can swallow regardless of age, sex, religion, moral beliefs, etc. The concept appears to be working because this idea has been received extremely openly, and by quite a few who were utterly oppossed to the PS3 previously. While it is not a MMO in the traditional sense we are used to, it is however a Massively multiplayer Online Environment. I think Sony may be on to something here, and if they pull it off I would not be suprised to see the PS3 just go nuts with sales. Now personally it does not appeal to me, because I would rather play a game. However the large majority of people out there are not gamers, but do want an escape from reality, especially an social escape. This may very well give them that without the stigma of being a traditional MMORPG.

And that being obnoxious, pre-pubecent, single digit IQ kids that think they are grown up enough to use a 'big-boy' overpriced game console that thier parents bought with a sack of money they magically have lying around? How about dateless, single, still-in-parent's-basement dwelling people that might use it to try and "hook-up" with someone?

Lets face a little reality, Sony wants it to sound like everyone and thier late departed great grandma has a PS3. Therefore, using a faux peer pressure and bandwagon mentality to force people to swallow thier huge price tag... unless it already dropped to half its original cost already. Sony seems to be stumbling again into an old pitfall they tripped into with thier PSP. The PS3 can do so much stuff that its use is clouded over and people are either confused by it, or hard core sony fans and willing to take out a 5th mortgage to buy thier latest system.

So much raw potential... like the zepplin or the HMS Titanic

Interestingly enough, it appears the interface used for this is not only extremely simple to use, but just as intuitive. At least that is what those who have seen in in action are saying.

That aside, this does not appeal to me on any level other then I find it interesting. I will likely spend a few hours playing with it just because it is there, but that will likely be about it for me.
Here is LittleBigPlanet in action.

However for the record, I still stand by the Ps3's Price tag being relevant to the eye of the beholder. I for what I am using it for, did not and still do not find $600 excessive. If you want to see what Blu-Ray is really capable of, get the new NIN DVD in Blu-Ray and Compare it to HD-DVD. Friend of mine has a 360 with HD and I of course have the Ps3. We setup both in his home theatre and compared them side by side, the difference is huge. However that is another can of worms and not what I am talking about here anyhow.

I have yet to see controls for any "Virtual Life" type program be excessivly complex. Or complex at all for that matter. If this ends up anything like other ones i've seen before, then there will be two castes of people in it. Creators, and consumers. This one definatly seems more for like candy for the creator caste.

And for my opinion of the blu-ray, I present a historical correlary.
Laserdisc was better than VHS... but VHS ended up the winner anyway.

Also, when it comes to new media formats replacing the older ones as an accepted standard, then you might as well quote me on this:
Change comes slowly, if it even comes at all.
