I'd like to /kill the people doing these attacks...
Okay, who in the hell is doing these lame ass DDoS attacks? I say we all gather together, grab some large blunt objects, find this person or persons, and beat them senseless.

For some reason alla is down for me...
Alla's down for me too,
I didn't notice POL or FFXI this time though,
cause my desktop's all @#$*ed up , it's gonna take me a couple days toget it back going good. All I have for now are my laptop, which unfortunelatly doesn't support FFXI, and my PS2, which has neither network adapter nor HDD.
I'd like to take a different approach and look at the brighter side of POL being down...and also take the defense of the "DDoS attackers."
First off, how do we know for a fact that someone on the outside is "attacking" POL and FFXI servers? Do we just assume it's true because "Sqauare-Enix" says so? Maybe it could be an internal problem ... who knows.
But let's assume that what we've read is true, and someone is "attacking" Play Online...
Would you rather have a person(s) come in and give us a week and 1/2 of slight errors, or would you rather have some person(s) come in and seize control of POL , delete everyone's characters, and leave with no trace or means of stopping another similar attack.
My belief is that "hackers" that are "attacking" POL are actually helping Square-Enix. They are currently showing the holes in the their code and allowing S-E to prepare proper defenses and prevent such another attack. Doing this will prevent a catastrophic hole in which someone who is actually malicious will come in and, pardon my French, really f*** our sh*t up.
The fact of the matter is, these people who are causing our login issues, were more than likely hired or will be hired by S-E to help beef up their internet security, which I, for one, would be completely thrilled about...who better to have running your network team, than the people who defeated it to start with? The FBI goes by this same principle when they arrest those who hack them.
While I do agree with you guys in that I wish I could be playing Final Fantasy XI right now, but the brighter side is...our security is getting stronger by the second.
On a similar but separate note, casinos have a policy -not- to hire anyone who manages to steal or otherwise cheat since they consider it a comprimise to security. Those crazy casino people!

Well actually, I don't think they're crazy at all...when an employee steals money, they just get fired...try to understand that the internet is a digital world and there is a much different definition of security.

DDoS attacks don't work like that (fortunately). As some of us may or may not already know DDoS stands for Distributed Denial of Service. A standard DoS attack consists of one machine sending too much data or packets to the server causing it to crash or not let other clients connect. This is easily dealt with by ignoring certain machines that send too many packets in x amount of time. DDoS is this on a wider scale, multiple machines spamming the server with packets but each machine is still within the limits making this almost impossible to counter.
I don't see why SE would make something up about attacks, doesn't serve them any purpose to lie about this kind of thing and they did not tell us immediately either.
I doubt the person or persons (probably latter) behind these attacks would want to work for FFXI ^^;
I managed to get in after half a day ;_; and was only in for half hour or so :'(
It's funny, I don't remember seeing any anti-Japan or anti-Western sentiment from the Chinese in FFXI.
Monday nights we have our usual "why the Chinese government sucks and all its officials must be tortured to death in public" seminars in Lower Jeuno. There's always active participation in these from all sides, although our friends from the PRC generally display a level of bloodlust towards their own rulers that we in the west find incomprehensible. We really think they enjoy being able to hear our accounts of what it's like living in a free society, though. They always promise to share the good news with their neighbours.
Wednesdays are "Free Tibet" nights. We march around Bastok for a couple of hours shouting slogans and demanding immediate Chinese withdrawal from Tibet. Turnout usually numbers in the thousands.
Fridays are "Support an independant Republic of China!" night. This is where we celebrate a free, independant Taiwan and look forward to the day where it's finally in a position to take-over the mainland. This generally involves leaflet campaigns on the airships and the boats between Mhaura and Selbina. There's nothing quite like a captive audience.
Saturdays and Sundays are generally too weighed down by the human rights symposia for any organised demonstrations.
Now... if only somebody sufficiently senior in the Chinese government can read this post, maybe we can finally get rid of all those damned gil-sellers. ^^
