My two yen on apologies. The Japanese have a ton of ways of apologizing. An apology for every occasion. My impression is that "Gomen nasai" is kinda informal, and "Gomen" even moreso. Probably passable, but there are a lot of other, more specific, polite, or formal ways of apologizing, especially if the character you're speaking to is higher levelled or unfamiliar.

Sumimasen

Commonly used as a preface or response to bothering or troubling someone. If you walk up to a stranger and ask a question or for help, this is what you would use instead of "Excuse me..."

Shitsurei shimasu

Used when excusing yourself from someone else's presence, getting in someone's way, or preparing to do something rude in their presence(Literally: " be impolite.")

Shitsurei shimashita

Same thing except when the rude deed has already passed without a chance to apologize in advance: Literally: " been impolite."

Moushiwake arimasen deshita

Very formal way of saying I'm sorry, usually for a blatant mistake. (Literally: "There is no excuse [for what I have done].")

Moushiwake gozaimasen deshita

Even more formal for the above. (You can then commence beating your head against the ground and commit suicide if you're still not quite sure you've proven yourself sorry enough. )

Here's one I finally got translated, though it's probably not appropriate for every situation.

"Gomen, watashi wa baka americajin desu."
"Gomen, watashi wa baka canadajin desu."

It's kinda "sorry, I'm a dumb foreigner"

Canadians would know that phrase, eh?

From cooking IRL, playing Go, watching anime & samurai cut 'em ups, and reading Magnajin I have about a 500 word Japanese vocabulary. I can spell perhaps 10 of those words. Of those 10, not one sems to be useful in this game. /sigh

I'll supply a more in-depth amount of "How to speak Japanese" stuff. (also some help on Romanji spellings of things.)

Please dont expect to be speaking it flawlessly in five minutes.. it'd be a 7 CD (uncompressed) set (given in mp3 format.. one mp3 = one CD) and a thurough and detailed "immersion" type of course that, if you stick with, you will be speaking and understanding Romanji Japanese in a realistic, but reasonable amount of time.

Best of all.. it's all free =)

However, I don't have the resources to supply everyone with this information directly, but I will put this in my crystalrecipes.com site, under the members access for those mithras who are interested. I will also grant temporary timed FTP accounts to those who want them so they can download them all at once.

I'd love to offer this more opely though.. so if people have interest in hosting the files for others to downlaod (bittorrent? Nah... You dont need to do that =P I will supply you with an FTP account, and a certain alloted time for you to download them. The server sends at T1 speeds, so you should be able to suck it down as fast as your connection allows. All I ask... is if you know somone who would also benefit from these... that you offer it to them, at the same price I'm giving it. (free.)

However, there's a slight catch... right now I am moving all my files to my servers, and that's keeping them pretty busy at the moment. This machine I am working on has been sold, as I've run out of places to put computers. It will soon be replaced by my newly built computer... but you gotta give me time to sort my crap out.

ok spelling might not be exact way it is spelled never wrote japaneese myself.. koochi is lips ... ho ho is cheek.. my boyfriend learned this and now allways ask me to put my koochi on his ho ho

Tono = "Lord" title of respect.
Shigata na gai = It cannot be helped.
Wakarimasku-ka = do you understand?
Wakarimas = Understand.

-San = respectful used for polite friends
-Sama = used for closer friends
-Sensei = used for a teacher
-Kun = Roughly "Pet" Often derogatory when not used for someone of a lower station
-Chan = Beloved.

A correction, if I may Gwynn. It's been my experince that Sama is a very archaic form of respect, it was commonly used for Samuri and feudal lords, but is now fallen out of common use. It's like Mistress or Lord.

Example, the cat in Trigun is refered to as Kuronekosama, lord black cat.

edit: ok I looked this up from the MN state edu, department of Languages ..."Japanese uses 4 different ways of addressing people: kun, chan, san and sama. Kun is somewhat condescending, chan is used for intimates and children, san is the universal mode and sama is deferential."

Actually kun is the one used more for little kids, while chan is friend and equal social status.
