You can get key-items as any job (from coffers or from quests), but you need to be the right job to pluck the actual AF from a coffer.

Mostly what I don't like about FFXI endgame is there isn't any. Honestly, FFXI has no endgame at all by classic MMORPG standards. Real endgame means actually slaying tons of raid-level stuff every night, not standing around mashing your claim macro in a herd of other shells all doing the same thing....
