Creepy mentors: a rarety? or common?

Post by mirabem »

I recently started playing FFXI a few weeks ago. one of my close friends plays, and whenever I'm at her house I usually sit and watch her and her linkshell group in action in some crazy locale beating up unbeleivable looking mobs.

I'm still fairly new to the game, so I don't know the finer points of this&that, where things are located, or what specific slash commands do. But I'm learning. For my level I think for a newbie mithra, i'm doing pretty well for myself.

So the other night I'm out at the dunes grinding out for my subjob quest fullfilments. It was taking forever to find a party, so I started typing amusing little shouts with little text icons like >^~,o^<, hoping to get someone's attention and get me into a party.

I get one tell from this guy who was a little amused and starts chatting with me, and saying silly/cute things that seem to be generally harmless. Soon I get another tell with a serious party offer. Score. So the first guy is like "well, where are you going? I'll escort you". He runs over, and he's a level 70 something Nin with a little mentor flag up. I was like "oh cool, that's nice of you, but I'm good, I have some prism powder leftover, I can make the run just fine, thanks".

But the guy follows me anyway, continuing with the ever increasing cute banter and witty emotes. I see no harm in talking to the guy, but as we stat fighting I'm pretty much ignoring him and concentrating on fighting. The group was simply awesome. Despite being the lowest member, we're getting like 250-300 exp per kill, xp is just flowing, everyone is happy.

So i'm there for like 2 hours, and this guy just stands there the whole time, making increasingly weird statements, with emotes like "::pokes your tail::" or "::rubs her ears::". the party is like "what is he, like your personal stalker? or your boyfriend?, and I'm like "uh.. no, I have no idea who he is".

Finally I hit 18, the party disbands, and this guy is still there. He says "do you have all the items for your subjob quest?", and of course, i don't. so he offers to take me out and get me these items. I think, well he's a little odd, but he's a mentor, & I need the help if I'm ever going to get this done tonight, so I agree to party with him. He takes me out and kills all the mobs in the area. We get the worm and the apron, but then he's like "the ghouls out here have a really bad drop rate, i know a better place". So he takes me out to some area i've never been before, has me set my homepoint, and leads me into this mine full of all these undead.

We go really deep, and get back in one of the rooms. he turns his character around so it's basically right up on mine and starts sending me all these really dirty, suggestive tells. It's kind of creeping me out and a little unerving, but I'm thinking "ok, just put up with this guy and you can get your skull and get out of here". But he just kind of stands there and emotes a bunch of obscenitie relating to my character being mithra. Eventually i've had enough and tell him off, so he's like "fine, be that way" & runs off, leaving me stranded in the center of this tunnel with no way out. eventually the repops kill me, and I have a long run back to where I started.

Now everytime I log in I get really gross tells from this guy. I mentioned this to my friend and she was like " you have to watch it, Alot of guys find the mithra characters cute, & use the mentor status to mess with girls".

Is this a common thing you run into playing a Mithra, or what? I don't know how to block the guy from contacting me. is there even a way? it's getting to the point where I don't even want to log in. is this kind of thing common, or what? I mean yeah I like my character, I think she's way cute, but I don't think it's nescesarily something to obsess over. has anyone ever run into this sort of gross weirdness?

It looks like this guy has an exceptional perverted attraction to Mithra.

Not all mentors are like that, as the description sais Mentors do not have any connection to SE or work for them
We're around to help new people get around and answer (Job related/Game related/Strategy related) questions for which GMs cannot be bothered.
There are a lot of retards around wearing the "Mentor" sign, since everyone with level 30 job can become one.
The mentor sign sais nothing as long as the person behind it does not know the purpose.

My advise to you,
if he keeps doing this type the command /blist add (Name of the person), that should at least rid you of any nasty tells.
Or call a GM on him if he is really harrasing you for example like follow you everywhere and making stupid emotes.
GMs can take forceful action if this is really bothering you.

Yeah, that was the impression that I was getting ^>.<^.

I was talking to my friend heather about it, and she was like "well, at least you got some items out of it ^^". yeah heather. thanks alot.

But seriously now, thank you. The few mentor characters I'd previously encountered were all very helpful, so it was kind of a jolt to run into this situation. I've been playing WoW for the past 2 years. and generally this kind if thing never happened to me. Well, that and if it happened, I could murder him. ..and then cannibalise his corpse >.<'..

I'm just glad there's a way I can get past this guy. I'll be introducing him to my blacklist post-haste.

One of the problems with being a Mithra is jerks like that. They are rarer every day and few of them are Mentors.

Sexual harasment is against the ToSA, and if reported can lead to game jail or even banning.

He bugs you in a serious fashion, call a GM.

Up until the mines thing, I'd have just said he sounded very young. What you see as harmless flirting, he sees as an invitation to cyber. Just shut him down fast if it gets too weird for you. Be blunt and direct. He won't be hurt. Guys can't comprehend subtle -- they just see that as you being nice (more invitation).

Like others mentioned, "/blist name" is wonderful. I use it to keep a reminder list of people I don't want around -- kind of a personal ban. Then I just forget about 'em. My criteria: spam or run a casino = blist, obstinately inept player = blist, mean player = blist. I never remove someone once I put 'em on blist.

BTW, I've never seen anything remotely like that while playing Mithra. Got some minor help on things here and there when I was a newbie ("just because you're cute"), but never anything even close to your experience.

Following you around while you XP'd and deliberately dragging you deep into the mines "cyber or die!" after is way beyond /blist. That's stalker materiel. GM needed to be called on this one.

Funny or not, I find it disgusting that people would take advantage of the game like this. ~.~ The others are right, he keeps it up, let him know flat-out that one more obscene/rude comment will result in a GM call. Most of those types are scared enough of GMs (or any sort of repercussion) that they'll back off.

I agree with you Kintraa. I mean If I were you I would of tried to kill him some how some way in the near future but since *sigh* thats not allowed in game and plus your too low lvl to even hurt him, then I would of straight out called the GM on his arshe without mercy. It disguist me so bad that people would do that in game. If by chance your on Pheonix Server give me a shout, non perverted lvl 67 rdm is at your service. Or join a friendly Mithra Pride on your server for help. I miss being a mithra, but then again I quit being one for that same reason...

On Bahamut the majority of Mentors are Lv30-50 (seems like the higher level people have better things to do :P) and most aren't rank 5 yet.

I haven't really encountered any creepy mentors and most seem to know less than me anyways :P

Blacklist is your friend

If some perverted Elvaan starts creeping me out I can always creep him out back "Psst, I'm a dude!"

Uh...then again, if he does...well, I haven't thought it that far.

I never put on my mentor sign, so far everyone I've seen with it is kinda dumb.

I've been hit on several times, and I keep getting asked if I am a manthra.

They don't understand that there are some girls who play games too.

Seriously. The other night I got invited to a party and the first thing that happens is I get 2 tells with "R U male or female?". Since when did that ever become a factor in anything?

And I /blisted that guy, btw >.<'.. I logged in and the first thing I get is a tell with "where you been, lover? ::pets::"

ick.

thanks alot of the advice. I have a feeling my blist will be growing over the next couple weeks, lol.

I'd be really tempted to blist a stranger that just asked that out of the blue. If the topic game up in party chat or just as regular conversation, it's fine. It's something else entirely for that to be the first words you see.

You get all kinds online. Total stranger, first words I saw: "my gf left me. can u plz be my gf?" Top prize for the most pathetic pickup line I've ever seen.

I figured this was a really young kid that badly needed a bit of instant internet education: /reply "Sure honey. BTW, I'm a guy. That matter?" Didn't hear back from him.

But girls don't exist on the interweb! :?

Seriously though, is it so hard to keep a computer game and reality separate? Do they seriously expect to get somewhere with people they meet on a computer game?

it does happen, but yeah still........thats why I stilck with my dont tell unless asked rule, but I found that in other MMORPGs you cant roleplay like you could in FFXI, without someone starting to do what this mentor was doing....I have had to break my rule many times in WoW already -.-

HeLLLLoooo there! I am a Manthra, shall we wiggle our tails together? :D

*ahem* Anyway, I don't see anything wrong if ppl want to play relationships online. I think it's rather cool actually and, as someone said, you never know what it leads to.

Why do you think I wanted to make a male character on Garuda? :)
