Okay, this is a band I love and I discovered them thanks to Amazon.

So last year I bought the re-mastered re-releases of Queensryche's first seven albums. They're totally awesome and include songs that were near impossible to get before along with additions to the liner notes and the original material sounds INCREDIBLE!

So anyways, I was gonna get them for $17 each at a local record store when my friend told me that Amazon had them for $10 each and I could get free shipping to boot! So anyways, I returned to Amazon a few weeks later looking for more deals and saw a recommendation page made just for me! Oh, I felt ever so special.

Anyways, I go there and I see a lot of Dream Theater CD's and DVD's on the list along with the Queensryche CD's I didn't purchase through Amazon because I already had them. Well, I had some extra money that I had gotten from people when I graduated from college so I read some reviews, and made some selections. I went with a few of the "OMG THIS IS AMAZING" CD's and a few of the "DT really blew it with this one" CD's and overall I was amazed. As soon as I could I completed my collection and am now working on getting side project CD's from the band members.

So here's the Dream Theater story. The band was formed when the members were attending Juilliard and for fun, would perform covers of their favorite metal acts at local clubs. After graduation they released their first album "When Dream and Day Unite." Overall a good album, but much like many other first albums (Like Queensryche's self-titled album and Nightwish's "Angels Fall First" for example) you can hear a lot of potential in the band and if you had listened to it first, you may have written them off.

After a few shakeups with lead singers (Starting with the departure of Chris Collins and the firing of his replacement Charlie Dominici) they settled on Kevin James LaBrie formerly the lead singer of Winter Rose and set to work. Their classically inspired metal powered by the skillful guitar playing of John Petrucci is incredible. More shakeups were to follow with their keyboardists. Kevin Moore, one of the founding members soon left and was replaced by Derek Sherinian. After Sherinian was fired in 1999 he was replaced with Jordan Rudess who DT guitarist John Petrucci and drummer Mike Portnoy had worked with on the album "Liquid Tension Experiment." Currently the Dream Theater lineup is Kevin James LaBrie on Lead Vocals, John Petrucci on Lead Guitar, John Myung on Bass Guitar, Jordan Rudess on Keyboards and Mike Portnoy on Drums.

For those that are interested here is a list of Dream Theater's albums. Don't ask me to pick a favorite, it would be asking a parent which one of their children should be killed.

When Dream and Day Unite, Images and Words, Live at the Marquee, Awake, A Change of Seasons, Falling Into Infinity, Once In A Livetime, Metropolis: Scenes From A Memory, Metropolis Live: Scenes From New York, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Train of Thought, Live At Budokan, and Octavium.

For the Dream Theater newbie, I recommend that you check out Awake, Falling Into Infinity, Train of Thought, and Live At Budokan. Two albums that are worth the title track alone are "A Change of Seasons" because it has a 23 minute title track that is amazing and "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" whose eight-part, 45 minute title track is on one of the two CD's that make up the album.

IF someone held a gun to my head and made me pick a favorite I would have to go with Train of Thought. Overall it is very dark and moody, far darker in material than their other albums; with songs about self image distortion, depression, parental abuse, cult mentality, and suicide. I must say overall that the album is fantastic and the 9 minute instrumental piece "Stream of Consciousness" is one of my all-time favorite instrumentals from them.

Been a DT fan for about 11-12 years now, ever since high school. By far my favorite progressive metal band. I can never tire of “Images and Words”.

But I thought they formed at the Berklee College of Music in Boston? A little rusty on my history though ...
