Basically everything you need to say in Japanese...almost
Ok, to start off I found this on a site with a bunch of moderate FFXI guides and this really peaked my interest.
It has alot of English to Japanese sayings that should really help you out.

A theory I have is to change your keyboard settings from an english setup to a, say...Japanese setup.Poge wrote:Wow, that's detailed. Nice work Neo.
2 questions though: Do you know of a way to type in Japanese with a NA version of the game? Are there kanji used to refer to different jobs?
I'm not sure if it would work and make all your lettering in Japanese but it's worth a try.
Read... and weep
I've tried that as well, unfortunately doesn't work. The only way to actually type in japanese is to get the japanese version...

If u want to type hiragana, kanji or katakana on FF u need to get a plug-in for microsoft office which comes on the disc, and also enable Asian script support either in control panel or when u install windows (this is assuming you're on PC and using windows). Once you've done this u can change the settings for each language using the language bar. It will interpret phonetic input differently depending on how u set this control (names, conversation, no abreviation etc). This plugin works fine using the JP version of XI but will only affect POL on US or EU version for some reason.
Thanks for this post tho^^ very detailed, i can tell alot of time was put into it
I have no idea why SE have disabled the language bar for western copies of XI and alowed it for POL, if anyone knows the answer to this i'd be interested to know
in any case, if u really feel it's necessary, POL uses the windows clipboard ^^ so if u wanted to u could write kanji macro readouts in word and paste them into FF on a separate palette so that u have some basic kanji stored or a separate macroset for JP parties maybe? I dunno, guess it's not that bigger deal

The problem I have when i attempt to type kanji in FF is that the language bar closes when I log into my character. I'm sure this is something which could be solved with a simple // added to the SE code... but that of course would be totally against the terms of service

too bad every Japanaese person I talk to doesn't type in Romanji. It's like another written language. But I can ready some of their hiragana and Katakana!
Character Name: Aerlyn
Server: Asura
Race: Mithra (duh!)
Job/Level: Thief/18 Red Mage/9
Home Country: Windurst
Yes, I am a MANthra, but who really cares =^.^=

Actually, probably the only way you can 'type' japanese characters into FFXI is either by:
A) Finding a japanese keyboard and adding dual KB support
B) Fonetics as described earlier.
Now, I can doubt that you could even insert a JP character into the North American version of FFXI, as it won't recognize it, to my knowledge. Let's just hope your japanese friend can read romanji.
