What kind of music do you listen to?

Post by DarkMithra »

On my other forums, this thread is always around. ^^

I listen to classic rock, blues, ska, instrumental and just rock - Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Pink Floyd, the Doors, Eric Clapton, the Doobie Brothers, Deep Purple, the Eagles (seeing them in concert April 8th!!), Queen, Hendrix, Rolling Stones, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Muddy Waters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime, Velvet Revolver, Guns 'n Roses, Catch 22, Mustard Plug, Reel Big Fish, the Mafia (local high school ska band...really good!), Joe Satriani, Steve Vai...

I play the guitar, too, so that's why I really like classic rock and blues. 8)

In no particular order, I listen to...

Against Me!, Black Flag, Anti-Flag, Against All Authority, Bauhaus, Ruki Vverh, the Leningrad Cowboys, DDT, Tarakanui, Animal Dzhaz, Social Distortion, Beth Orton, Dead Can Dance, Darling Violetta, Evanescence, Jimmy Buffet, Lords of Acid, Loreena McKennitt, Heather Alexander, Wolfsheim, Rammstein, Within Temptation, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (love my Hawai'ian music), Gorky Park, TATU, the Red Army Choir, Blackmore's Night (www.blackmoresnight.com -- CHECK THEM OUT. I found out about this group in Russia -- they are AWESOME.), Shura, Ofra Haza, Lacuna Coil, Henry Mancini, the Cambridge Singers, Future Sound of London, Apoptygma Berserk, Assemblage 23, Enigma, Beethoven, Dvorak, Bach, Enya, DJ Irene, American folk music (can't help it -- it comes from the southern part of my family), various movie soundtracks, Talib Kweli (even though he does rap which I don't like for the most part, the poetry and imagery of this guy's songs is just beautiful), Frank Sinatra, Sting. Vengaboys (guilty pleasure...), the Eagles (my dad got me into them when I was young), Rolling Stones, the Beatles -- the list goes on and on.

My worrrd, people still listen to the stuff that was recorded when I was a kitten. I didn't think anyone younger than 30 had even heard of Simon and Garfunkle.

I don't listen to a lot of music anymorrre. This is kind of odd as I used to play guitar and sing for my living way back in the Great Folk Scare of 59 - 67.

On the one hand, therrre are the stations that haven't changed their playlist since Clapton got on it. This would not be too bad, save for the fact that they only seem to play 500 numbers from 25 years of Rock. 67 oldies stations, ALL play the same 500 numbers. I am soooooo sick of them.

On the other hand, there are stations that play the new stuff. None of my young friends listen to these either. The numbers seem to be selected to either vibrate the skin off your car doors, or to be used as a car alarm depending on wether it has music or merely a beat.

I like most music that has structure. The extrrreems of metal, jazz, and 18th century chamber music, where structure just goes away, looses me. Favorites are blues, rock that I haven't hearrrd 10,000 times already, and traditional folk.

I am a grrreat swing dancer. I will cheerfuly dance to things I would not pause for on the radio dial. All it needs is a good 4/4 beat.

I've pretty much given up on "mainstream" music. >_> I prefer stuff that's "clean" (meaning it's not all "OMG I luv drugs and sex and booze and using potty words!") and stuff that's not angsty/break-up/everything sucks. I really can't find anything I like among the music of the masses.

All the stuff I adore has dropped off the radar (e.g. Jennifer Knapp, Broomtree) and my favorite band (Five Iron Frenzy) finally parted ways after being together for years and producing several albums. I still listen to their albums every now and then.

Lately I just listen to video game music. Yes, VG music. NERRRRRRD. My WinAmp is loaded with music from Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Alundra, etc. I have some CDs burned with game music. I really love Uematsu's Black Mages Album. :D I also like Irish/Celtic music, particularly the Irish tunes produced by the Corrs.

Crap. I left out a few. I LOVE Neil Diamond. My mom got me hooked on Neil Diamond with the song Coming to America. I wish I knew where our record player was, because we have the original record with that song on it. I also adore Billy Joel and Elton John -- got to see them both in concert in AZ four years ago, and that SO rocked. My dad's favorite song is Piano Man -- he got me into liking Billy Joel. Until I went to that concert, I never realized that Elton John sang the song Rocket Man which has always been a favorite of mine, for some reason or another, so when he started to sing it with Billy Joel on the piano, I was so screaming with glee.

I was raised on punk music (old school punk and Russian punk music) from my brothers and sisters and oldies from my parents. So I tend to have really varied music tastes.

I grew up on music from the 60's and early 70's. I even know how to fully operate and repair a record player! Now I listen to classical, jpop, jrock, industrial, house, trance, jungle, etc. No rap or country, nuh uh.

As far as rap and country go... I had a professor this past semester who taught a class called Rap, Culture, and God. It was by far one of the most interesting classes I have ever come across. I was in this professor's Love in World Religions class, but he did speak a lot about the rap class he taught. We listened to a lot of rap music in the class when we were dealing with the portrayal of love in modern culture, and there's actually A LOT of rap out there with good intentions, good messages -- I was surprised, to say the least. I still don't like it, but now I know to listen to the words more. Talib Kweli is a fairly not-so-well-known rap artist -- he does some pretty interesting stuff.

Country music...ehhhh. I used to be a fan of it, but not so much anymore. I'm much more into old country music, like the stuff they played in the 1950s. I love the soundtracks to old Western movies like The Magificent Seven (which I'm listening to right now, actually). My mom got me into that since she LOVES westerns. I don't know why.

I also like a lot of "old" singers like Rosemary Clooney and Ted Lewis. My grandmother used to listen to Ted Lewis when she was my age! I was listening to his song Is Everybody Happy Now? sometime this past summer when my grandma was at our house. When she heard it, she came into the room and told me that she hadn't heard the song since she was my age. She and my grandfather used to dance to it. It was a sweet moment. I think Ted Lewis sang the original On The Sunny Side of the Street song as well as the Golddigger's Song (We're in the Money).

I'm not into a lot of the newer bands since they mainly seem to be cookie cutter versions of each other, just a diffrent name to be called by. And unfortunatly i listen to the "sex, drugs, language" type songs...but not because of the lyrics...i hardly listen to lyrics anymore, its the beat of the music that i listen to...sometimes they seem to activate a prrrimal drive in me and i enjoy that. I listen to music back from the 50's and up, and ive found all kinds that i like to listen to, i cant name specific groups really since i tend to not pay attention to the groups...i just listen to what i like.

My parents LOVE Simon and Garfunkle. They're okay, but I prefer harder classic rock like Zeppelin and Deep Purple. ^^

There's this group of kids at my school that claim to be die-hard Led Zeppelin fans. However, they only know songs like Stairway and Rock & Roll.

They have to listen to at least Houses of the Holy (Dancing Days and The Ocean are two of my favorites from that one), IV (The Battle of Evermore...'nuff said), and Physical Graffitti (The Rover, Ten Days Gone, Trampled Under Foot...probably their best album) to consider themselves Zeppelin fanatics.
