Its funny, that when most ppl think about rock, they think about heavy metal. But I for one, love rock. Cant stant Heavy metal. Some metal bands yes, but not a single "heavy metal". They just sound like cookie monsters over a microphone.

I caught an article on NPR about a voice coach who teaches rockers how to scream without damaging their voices.

It can be done it seems.

Hell, I lost my upper range for months during and after Basic from all the "motivated" responses and cadence calling I did in training.

It can be done nicely when set to nice music. This band (In Flames) is one of my new favourites, and they scream a lot, but also sing too.
I agree :) I'm not really a big fan of screaming/shouting music as I like something to sing along to but a couple of good bands that come to mind are System of a Down and Killswitch Engage.

Who's most people? I think the general concensus of "Rock" these days are all those Indie bands like Muse, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, Incubus etc. Funny 'cause Indie is short for Independant but they're anything but that, I'd class them as "light rock" 'cause even chavs seem to like them, it's rock for everyone really.

There's more than one genre of Metal (which is a sub genre of Rock), most people not in the know think it's all Heavy Metal. If you don't like the heavier stuff you might like the stuff with good melodies and excellent guitar riffs such as Iron Maiden (Heavy/Stadium Metal), Symphony X (Power/Prog Metal) or Nightwish (??? Metal, Nightwish singer is a trained opera singer).

Who sounds like cookie monster? I can't think of anyone remotely close.

I know James Hetfield from Metallica saw a vocal coach after her buggered his voice up on a tour. They just give them a few simple exercises it seems.

I've seen interviews where John Davis from Korn stated that he has a vocal coach. They showed clips of him yodeling to to practice vocal ranges or something.

Just because you see it as a general concensus, doesn't mean everyone does. From where im at. The mention of rock means "Heavy metal" or "Punk" Rock. Nothing more or less. Even here in the Office where I work, I talk about rock, they think im talking about death metal, unless I mention bands like green day or something. ewww.

Rock = The Rolling Stones (in my opinion)
Indie bands are just that.. I don't know where they get off being put in the "rock" catagory

Tysbil has a good point about 50's R&B... That I do like, no doubt :)

'cause there's usually one or two guitarists, a bassist and a drummer and they write and perform their own music (even though it's aimed at everyone like the big corporate sellouts they are)
