You'll notice that a little further down in related links that there is a 'officially denied' topic. So unless they lied (which, amusingly, is possible), there is no actual sequel.

"that the next-generation massively multiplayer online RPG footage presented at the show is from a completely different and original title."

So... FFIV? :P

I don't think their next MMO will be FF. It sounds to me like it's going to be a new title, not a spinoff of an existing one (so not Chrono or Breath of Fire either.)

Here's hoping they DO make an updated client for FFXI on the next-gen systems, though. By which I mean with overhauled graphics, perhaps new systems that bypass the limitations of the PS2 and/or 360, etc., etc.

As they've said a billion times, they can't do that. The information sent out from the FFXI servers has to be the same info, read by all consoles(I conside the PC a console when you're running FFXI without a windower) the same. If they updated the client for newer systems, they'd have to send out a more complex data stream, which would give the PS2 a heart attack.
In the end, I'm just talking out of my ass. So take it all with a grain of salt.

I'll second that if they release said theoretical updated client for the PS3.

phase out PS2

Post by Althaia »

lol, yeah, PS2 phased out FFXI! :P

I heard about this supposed sequel and got worried. All it would do is take most of our most experienced players with it, those who have done enough or advanced enough in the storyline.

But, seriously, phase out the PS2... I know it'll suck for those who still play FFXI on PS2 and won't upgrade to PS3, but... it'd make the game better-looking for the rest of us. :P
