Farming Advice

Post by Igihstehr »

Now that I have reached a higher level (57) my desires for gear have grown considerably. All my favorite farming areas no longer yield as much I would like them to in one trip... (life was so much simpler as a 30 THF) Telewhoring doesn't work for me - I usually just wind up falling asleep.

My first thought is, now that I have access to the aqueducts to farm Fomor Codexes... Any advice, warnings, etc before I set out as 40 DRG/WHM (capped) to try my hand? Or suggestions for alternate farming areas...

Thanks!

If i remember correctly...since it's been awhile since i was last in the aquaducts...anything in there will con VT-IT. I was in there with a 5 person party and we had trouble with the stegataurs *sp which drop the codexes. If this is the route you choose to go you may want to find a tank and healer at the very least to go with you.

They're all doable as nin/whm. I've solo'd all the types of 'taurs as NIN/whm before -- even the IT+ ones (though that's scary even when duo'd). The VT ones are pretty easy for a NIN/whm to do. There aren't any that are under VT that I know of, though.

I prefer the level 50 Sacrarium ones, myself. 'Dunno if a drg can solo 'em or not. The methods by which a drg solos are too different from what a nin does for me to judge. Definitely bring holy water (a lot!) in case you don't turn your back in time. Reraise is handy, too.

Pull them away from their spawn spot for the fight. That way if things go bad, it will roam away and you can safely stand up via RR.

In Aqueducts I believe the bats in the first 'taurs room are EP-DC- could be wrong though, its been awhile since I was last in there. The 'taurs in that room are also considerably weaker/easier then the ones further in as well.

Just a warning, Codexes have dropped considerably in price in the last few months and they honestly aren't the quickest to sell, expecially considering its a bazaar item only. They're also not the quickest dropping things in Vana'diel. Several of my linkshell mates did a codex/subligar run over the weekend- spent four hours there and didn't have a single codex drop in Sacrarium with two THFs. They did see 8 or so subligars though

It may be more worthwile for you to BCNM with a couple of friends. I haven't done it, but Royal Jelly is supposed to be a good one for DRGs. If you haven't already started on one there's also crafting- most crafts can be started easily now expense wise and some (Cooking, Fishing and Alchemy namely) start giving you a steady income early even with the current economy. Consumable ingredients are almost always in demand.

There's also gardening- its pretty cheap to start up and a good regular income depending on what you try to grow.

Royal Jelly is pretty hit-or-miss. Since Erase has dropped severely in price the only real moneymaker is Utsusemi: Ni. Still, its fun and all you need is 2x DRG or WAR wielding Polearm (You need piercing polearms, not slashing) and 1 RDM.

Crafting, fishing, and gardening are your best options. Cooking, Alchemy, Woodworking, Goldsmithing, etc. Anything with consumables will work. Also, sometimes its worth the effort to farm your ingredients, sometimes its better to just buy them so do your research.

Gods- tell me! Erase went from 750k to less then 300k almost overnight the last time I did UO ><

I'd just bought the spell for whm when I was levelling that and that weekend I did UO and got Erase- only to see that it had dropped by more than half in price :(

I >think< its currently going for like 5k on Remora- its (almost) enough to turn my stomach. Upside of it all though- there's no longer an excuse for WHMs not to have it, which is good.

I've done Royal Jelly 4 times and have never lost 2/4 on Utsusemi:Ni as well. The RDM I used to play with is out to sea for 4-6 months with the navy... We originally did it just to get Ni for him and then a couple of times for the cash... I've also soloed Treasure and Tribulation a couple of times but have never gotten anything worthwhile. It does not seem to be worth the 50 seals unless maybe I get Phlanax but that's supposed to be a fairly rare drop.

BCNM is definately your best bet. Codex don't have a great drop rate, but go for about 100k from what i've seen. Royal jelly is pretty easy, but I haven't done it in a while. I prefer to do the PCharm one, which is far more money making.

As for crafting... You're not really going to make much of anything if you're levelling it. You may make some gil if you stop at a certain level and only make one or two consumable items, but you're going to need to get most crafts to 60 to be able to HQ anything enough to make it worth the time and effort. Honestly, I doubt you'll see any real gil until the craft is 100. Even then it's tough. Big itcket items don't sell like they used to, so even making the highly sought after HQs will get you a third of the price they did 6 months ago. So, you have to be incredibly patient and hope whatever you're making doesn't get undercut. (which it will)

If you want to make gil crafting, use FFXI AH. Carefully check the profit on your server for every single item that particular craft can make before you decide to level it up over 60.

If you're looking to make money on HQ, know that the tiers go 11: 10%, 31: 25%, 51: 50% for "skill over item-level" and "HQ rate". Also, it's only a "chance" to HQ. You won't always get 1:10 for tier1 item. I've done 1:1 and 0:36 on tier1. It's just an average. You also need to have over-skill in all the crafts needed in order to gain the higher HQ tier. 51 over in one skill and 11 in another means you're 10%, not 50%.

Knowing all that, you can hunt down which crafts can actually make gil and which don't. Some crafts, for instance, actually don't make much profit at all for anything the craft can make in the 60->100 range. Others have a plethora of profit items.

BTW, consider the sales-rate in FFXI-AH, too. Cooking, Alchemy, and Wood/Shihei are all profitable, but you're basically turining yourself into an AH-slave. I prefer the small effort, large reward items. They sell slower, but you don't work nearly as hard for your gil.

Tele-whoring is a great way to make money. However, due to your position, you're pretty much SoL on that.

Crafting is another nice way to make money, but you'll be losing money before you start making it, unless you already have a craft that is high enough. And from everything you've said, BCNMs seem like the thing for you to do.

What I'd say is try to get what you can off of the level40 BCNMs. P. Charm, Utsusemi: Ni and sell 'em and use the money for equipment.

Get DRG to 75, and start doing the KSNM Operation Desert Storm. Some REAL nice money to be made there.

Advice for BCs: just like crafts, hit FFXI-AH for the profit after checking the drop lists. That and always go with friends and use full-share method. "My orb / my drops" usually ends up with just 2-3 people making gil.

Totally agree, splitting is much nicer but can only be done with people you know and trust.

No offense, but I won't ever do a BCNM with a pickup party period. I did once and the damn BLM decided to be an ass and commit suicide. Without his Sleepga we got slaughtered.

Dunno why I'd take offense to that.

You seem to attract asshats, I've done the odd pickup and met some very nice people :)

Keavy: The ass-hat magnet.

Honestly, I think its my attitude towards stupidity and incompetence that makes people want to cause me physical pain. Crap other people put up with I don't and I'm quite vocal about it. I don't make a big deal about the RDM missing a Refresh recast by a few seconds or the tank losing hate after I had to cure-bomb them thanks to that TP attack and critical hit they just took but if I cast Haste and pull hate or am lucky to get one Refresh every ten minutes I will bitch and apparently people aren't cool with that.

I'm not perfect but I do my best to ensure that all the melee's are alive and everyone has Regen, Haste, Protect, and if needed, Shell up at all times and all I ask of the others is that they do their best to ensure that their party role is filled.

Regen? WTF?

What was I smoking when I wrote that? :?

I only use Regen when someone needs it. There are only three people in a party that get regular Regen attention from me: The Tank, the puller, and any DRK that is overzealous and/or loves Souleater.
