Blist

Post by Pheonixhawk »

What does someone see when they get black listed? is it just a tell with no response. Do they get a message saying, you have been blisted. What?

I think they get nothing at all.

Some things do get past the blist. It's unfortunately incomplete. They can still spam stuff to iritate you (like randoms). Call a GM if that happens, though. IMHO, I wish it would even remove the toon -- vanish them completely.

A person can't tell that they've been blacklisted unless you actually tell them. Or if they're in your linkshell/party and you ask why someone seems to be carrying on a one-sided conversation.

Only error message is if you try and /tell someone on your blacklist. Try it. I /blisted myself, sent a tell to myself, and got the error.

BTW to remove someone from your blacklist, type /blist, hit enter. A list of ppl on your blacklist will appear. Scroll down to the name you want to remove and press enter. You'll get a confirmation... "delete?" Press enter again. =^_^=

I had to Blacklist a level 8 WHM no sub in my LS that harassed me endlessly for a Powerlevel. I told him that I and every other WHM worth inviting to a party struggled their way through those levels on their own.

When I offered to help him with his Subjob items at level 18, he cursed me out and he got blacklisted.

I rarely blacklist linkshell members. Like the gent above, they HAVE to deserve it.

I rarely blist people because I just ignore idiots, they tend to go away after a bit. No, the only people I blacklist usually are people who like I'd have a disagreement with about something and they're just being a prick about it. Problem is I love to argue alot, so I usually take them off of blist later on.

Or I just tell them I've blist'ed them and see what they do, hehe, it can be quite amusing.
In the end, I'm just talking out of my ass. So take it all with a grain of salt.

I used to just ignore, too. But then I found after they shut up, I'd forget about them. Then I'd find myself in some group with said idiot later on. He'd be an idiot again and I'd go "hmm, didn't I swear never to group with this idiot again?" I'm the most optimistic cynic in the world -- I keep expecting people to be nice.

Blist is like a notebook to keep track of people you never want to group with because it leads to a bad party.
I rarely blacklist linkshell members. Like the gent above, they HAVE to deserve it.
After recruitment, the most important job a shell leader has is to punt mean people really quickly. Most people won't blist someone to stay in a shell. They'll just quietly leave and hang out in another shell. If your shell has someone in it that is causing people to blist them, that's a very serious problem. That person is a shell-killer.

The silent walk-out issue is one reason I dislike FFXI's shell system over the guild systems used on every other MMORPG. It fosters the disposable relationship notion. People leave rather than stay and work to make a group better. They invest less into a shell than into a guild. MUCH harder to build a good group under shell system than guild system.

What is this "guild system" you speak of?

Guild Wars only lets you be in one guild, amazingly enough, and gives you a cool looking cape :) you can't turn it off (I'm pretty sure) as soon as you log you'll be in the guild sotospeak. It works across your account so any additional characters you create are instantly in that guild too.
Also has a nice feature that tells you when each member was last on if they're not on currently :)

I have a few names on my blist. I'd say quite a few are casinos, rest are f*cktards I hate with passion like the few who ruined ninja for me. Coincidentally I was invited to a party and one of said f*cktards was in it. I told the leader I wasn't partying with him and left promptly. Maybe next time when the leader needs/wants a good COR (I had partied with him before) he won't invite that dick to be their tank (bet he sucked ass too).
One is an elitest dick of a COR; I checked him, being a COR myself I was interested to see his gear and what his comment said, the 'tard had "Dragoon No Thanks" so I immediately blacklisted him and slapped him. Don't think some /NIN nub should be elitest about other jobs when he can't even be bothered to level a proper sub :x

Oh~ I'm a sack holder in both MithraPride and my main chat shell Cake. Yesterday someone said she used be scared of me and was afriad that if she talked I'd kick her  then she realised I'm just angry a lot of the time (also she's been given a sack so I can't kick her :P) but that's 'cause I'm mainly farming/synthing most of the time now (or used to) and that really does annoy me at times

I stick with an LS until either the LS dies due to members moving on to endgame or it becomes so full of beggars and whiners that I have to leave.

Asking for help is one thing, but throwing a fit when no one will assist is another completely. I have had times that I needed help so what I did was kindly ask if anyone was bored and needed something to do. Best example was with my AF. I knew what needed to be done and where to go beforehand (I've been dreaming of wearing my WHM AF since December 2004) and if everyone was too busy to help I leveled, crafted, or fished.

I never once threw a fit because the members had other things to do. IF I had planned ahead like the rules state (Post in the LS forum at least one week in advance) and if none of the people who offered help were available then yeah, I would be upset.

Problem is that most people still shout for help on stuff like Mission 5-2, Genkai, and AF in Jeuno. For that stuff you need to ask for assistance in Aht Urghan.

What is this "guild system" you speak of?

Guild Wars
The "Guild Wars" game has nothing to do with the guild system used in all mmorpgs but ffxi. On other MMORPGs, a "shell" is a "guild", but you can only have a single one at a time. Typically there are a fair number of member management tools available to the leader & officers, too -- such as promoting someone to officer, demoting, new leader, kick & invite peeps even while offline, etc..

Often guild leaders and officers are given preferential treatment by GMs, too. Their GM calls go to the head of the queue for guild issues and bugs effecting raids and such (not for individual problems). It's a great strategy for handling problems effecting a large number of people quickly rather than scrounging through 50 or 60 individual calls on the same topic.

One major difference between guild and shell is that there can be only one guild per person. So, people tend to work harder at building and maintaining a good group of people. The other major difference is that guild tags are usually shown overhead with the player's names. This doesn't sound like much, but it is actually pretty important. It helps foster group identity as well, pride in your guild, and even encourages people to join a guild if they don't have one -- via the "gotta keep up with the Joneses" syndrome.

In FFXI, except for my friends who talk about their shells, I have no clue who's in which shell or what shells even exist. This isn't good at all for encouraging people to join shells and stay in them.

SE likes to tout their shell system as a step up from the guild system and an ad-hoc chat system. IMHO, it's an enormous step backwards. Even M59 (the grandaddy of gui mmorpgs) had guilds and as many chat channels as you wanted to create.

FFXI has one of the most inovative game systems around with it's main/sub job and job switching, but the UI is from the dark ages.

I was just stating how it works in Guild Wars, which seems just like the guild system you described. Guild Wars came after FFXI and WoW, stands to reason they wouldn't have created the whole guild system :P

In FFXI the leader cannot be changed or removed, you'd have to start a new shell completely. But when I popped back on GW after not being on for ages since my friend (the leader) hadn't been on in ages too the position was shifted to myself and he was demoted to an Officer, wonder if that's the same for WoW and the like.
