I'm a thief and I don't enjoy being told not to pull certain monsters because of a bad party...but more than often I end up _having_ to pull something like it because theres theres usually nothing else.
ok, first: if you dont like searching for specific mobs think of this: would you rather take a while to find a good mob, or die alot? Always being the puller myself i can kind of relate but also having leveled thf as my first job all the way through to lvl 30 with no pl or anthing, especially from 10-15, i learned alot of patience, mainly the 2 hour wait to find a party. Then it just kind of stayed with me the rest of the time.

once again, after reading the first 10 replys, I got too lazy. so if I post something someone already said, I am sorry.

Here is how I feel for this topic.

I'd day you try it out first, I see the person who post this topic doesn't even have nin unlucked yet. Thf can sub many many different jobs depends on the party and what you are doing. I know that is not the topic, so let's not go there.

Duel weapon is important for thfs I think for the reason here.
1st
Stat bonus. Do you know there are weapon that give you dex+7?, do you know there are weapons that give you agi+7? or simply atk+10, or acc +10? Thfs can use shield, but not that much good shield with good bonus.
2nd, you can use 2 weapons doesn't mean you "have" to use 2 daggers, 2 swords. Thf's most damaging WS is from dagger, so main weapon usually use dagger. but on your off hand, some thf use K Club, attacks many times to get tp, with thf's triple attack, they get tp even faster then rng or sam sometimes.
3rd You are level 38 now, so you think lv 1 to 50 is longer then lv 50 to 75...... do the math by how much exp needed to level up, not just by level. lv 70 to lv 75's exp = level 1 to 40 alone, you do the math.

And of course, there are a lot more reasons that why a thf should sub nin, not other jobs for exp party. But that is not the topic, so I am not going there.

Keep in mind there there is almost always a way to one-up someone.

Either way, I agree with you, Lihera. For Thief, there really is no good or bad sub as long as it's a melee job. I would like to think that THF/BLM would be shunned. >.< Although, THF/PLD sounds pretty bad...

My pleasure. Just be glad there seems to be a limit on the number of quotes you can have. Otherwise, Lihera would have crashed everyone's long before I even got a chance to post another. :)

There were about fifty "quotes" and "/quotes" typed when I quoted her.

I like ranger. I was lvlin last night for the first time (I havent been leveling AT ALL for about a month, mainly crafting [woodworking at apprentice rank!] and fishing[going for Lu Shang Rod] have been at same lvl for a month) and i really liked it. I'm considering making it my main, but until then, it shall be my thf sub. :P

thief/nin?

Post by Darknei »

Here are some thoughts from a lvl 34 pld

I dont like thief/nin because it gives them a sense of invulnerability. One time in kazahm, a thief/nin i pted with pulled, immediately saed, and before i could get hate back, the mandy cast sleep. Since it was still on the thief, i couldnt wake up, and the thief took a beating till i could. Id rather a thief not have the security of utsusemi when choosing targets. Also, since i use cure to draw hate, i cant regain hate from a thief/nin with utsu on till it wears off, unless i have shield bash ready, or voke is up. I dont yet know what monsters attacks are like beyond my lvl, but i dont want a thief drawing attention and getting a nasty status or aoe attack.

I also dont like it due to the cost of entry, and nin too for that matter. The game takes long enough without needing to farm for stacks of shihei from lvl 12 on, and i think this has also contributed to the shortage of tanks in general. Nin as main or sub is a high lvl's job, and the preponderance of them discourages newer players from trying to lvl a tank. I hate being told that a ninja can do what i can better, while ppl gripe about how hard it is to find tanks.

In my view, filling your role well is all that matters. A thief is to pull and help consolidate aggro while doing moderate damage. I dont think that the choice of sub affects the core duties of a thief greatly, as opposed to a pal subbing other than war, or a nin subbing the same. The danger of elitism is that you wind up having an ever smaller crowd of elitists to choose from. I'd hate to see thief become like white mage in the amount of people who choose to play it.
