Preparing to fight an avatar...

Post by Kahvi »

i'm getting ready to start my avatar pilgramage across vana'diel, since i just got my summoner job to level 20.

I was wondering if you had some helpful tips or experiences with the avatars that may prevent me from getting smacked down.

and has anyone figured out what summoning skill really does? Does it effect summoning interruption, summons damage, and upkeep costs? or is there another stat i need to be concerned about other than INT for bonus mp?

many thanks.

I used this site FFXI Summoner for my information. I've tried four of the level 20 fights so far and only managed to beat one.

One random thing I would reccomend is that when you're really ready to get serious about it, make sure you have a nice amount of cash to devote towards it, if you don't then I'd farm it up. Each run is going to cost you in supplies and at the very least you're going to have to do 6 runs but in all likelihood you'll have to do more before you beat all 6.

Heh, as far as I can tell there's a lot of debate about what Summoning Magic skill actually does. From what I've read some people say, at least for the lvl 20 fights, your 2hour attack is more likely to be resisted with an uncapped skill and you're more likely to be interrupted if being hit while summoning. But, like I said, no one is really sure.

There's another way. If you have a job over 60, I recommend blowing off the mini-battles entirely and doing the real thing. It's fun, and you're a lot less likely to die of bad luck or commands failing to activate. The hardest part is getting the avatar party together in the first place.

From what I've heard, summoning skill boosts your avatars' damage and accuracy, and makes you less likely to be interrupted when you're summoning. It's worth taking some time now and then to summon over and over to raise your skill.

thanks for the websites to look at. Almost had titan yesturday after the maintence was done. I was followng FFXI Summoner almost to each word.. except i forgot to run away after having searing light hit.

got searing light to hit twice... but the avatar had more HP left than according to the guide... I was fighting on a mutually neutral day and my summon skill was not maxed. I think next time im gonna get titan...

Not sure exactly where it is, but somewhere on Alakhazam there is a 15 minute long .avi of a Rdm/Nin soloing Titan Prime. Scary stuff. He blinktanked it, stabbed alot, a dash of the Spirits Within WS and Aero III.

Even at his/her really high level, it looked like a very tough fight. Watch yourself out there, eh?
In the end, I'm just talking out of my ass. So take it all with a grain of salt.

I'm almost half tempted to wait till i get RDM to 75, NIN to 40, Excalibur and that upgraded relic dagger... but thats (1) wishful dreaming and (2) not gonna happen anytime soon.

Knights of the Round WS would prolly own Titan...

Titan is easy trust me.

Download my guide as well as the FFXI summoner, Mine will walk you step by step through the Titan fight what to expect and i also provided screenshots so you can see the placement. Also i have a few differences in my strat then the FFXI summoner, things I felt made a difference. As a reference I took down Titan, Garuda, and Ifrit in 1 attempt with the strat i put in it.

Um... maybe i should have mentioned this earlier...

I'm a firm believer in 1st person view... 3rd person view.. doesn't /do/ it for me... maybe this once i'll have to try 3rd person as a matter of survival...

You can use First person view, I only used third person To make it easier to Show the reader Where you should be approx as I cant really show that in first person.

View is a matter of preference.

Well.. next on my list to try again is titan in bastok... having trouble getting +hp items, looking for things that woudl work well with my Scentless bracelets and Compound eye circlet. armor is up to date at least. I'm gonna see what +hp earrings, rings or necklaces i can afford before taking the plunge again. The def bonus from the crab definatly kept me alive longer than i expected... too bad i ran out of selbina milk midway thru the fight.

as a Mithra you should have more then enough hps with the bare min of items I suggested. I assume your using the hotkeys, if you are, Definitally do the time they save makes a difference.

Outside this If you dont have the pumpkin hat, the halloween events will be starting soon and you should be able to get one. I cannot emphasise enough how big of a difference that emnity -1 makes, Its huge, for the most part so long as carbuncle has hit the avatar, It could care less about my existance except if i use a potion.

These are very tough and risky I prefer the wait till your lvl 60 and then get a party to go or wait till your 45-55 and have 2 or 3 lvl 75s take you to bad your not on remora or I would put something together for ya. ^^

Something that might be of interest to you, I found a trick that seems to prevent the avatars from even using their 2 hour, making them infinitely easier. I wiped out shiva, leviathan, and ifrit with it yesterday, none of the 3 used their 2 hour. Im going to hit ramuh which is the last one I need here in 45 mins, If it works on him as well, I will update the guide.

BY THE WAY, As a note, Garuda Should be your absolute First avatar if your summoner is 25. Aerial Armor is a huge benefit. whoever said that buff does not carry into the fights anymore is Dead wrong. I used Aerial armor and Shining light to buff myself with before I entered the 3 fights I went into yesterday, and they did in fact carry over into the battle.

I've been so preoccupied with trying to get that pumpkin helm that i havent had time to avatar hunt recently...

Id wait till i reach higher levels if it wernt for one thing... everyone else in another LS im in got them... and im pretty far off from getting the avatars that way level wise (otherwise i would have organized a hunt for some Carbuncle mitts first) besides, its kinda fun going toe to toe with the avatars themselves... nothing to protect you except for a nuclear blue fox/rat/dog hybred thing and fast connection speed...

I really gotta get that helm soon... i dont know how much longer i can hold out not going after the avatars....

Dunno what all this stuff is about equipment; I waded in with my level 19 robe and my black slacks, and kicked some ass with Carby. =^.^= After you get your timing down, it's not too hard to just nuke 'em to death; three Astral Flows should do it, if you can avoid them long enough to get them off.

thanks for all teh help, but i must admit defeat.

I'm gonna go back to leveling Bard and Red Mage again rather than try to pound my head against a wall any longer.

It's likely that I'll go get some carby mitts first then go back and give this another shot... until then i'll just be roaming along with flute and lute in hand.

I actually had no problem with the lvl 20 Avatar Battles o.o I find them to be really easy ^^ the only ones you have to be careful of are Ramuh and Ifrit >>;;
Shiva 1/2 - Titan 1/1 - Ifrit 1/3 - Ramuh 1/3
Leviathin 1/1 - Garuda 1/1 - Fenrir 0/0
