From another waay too derailed thread:
Asphe wrote:It kinda is. But that's intentional. No serious story... imagine it's Seinfeld in a japanese high school. Perhaps you have to be or like japanese? Or you know... that kind of mindset. Can you imagine Ore Imouto being broadcast on HBO primetime? (incidentally, Ore Imouto is never broadcast in Japanese primetime. All that 'hentai' stuff CNN goes overboard on... is usually shown after midnight). Most NAs just can't get over that Kiss X Sis is not something for the Cartoon Network. But a lot of us like K-On, because it's vapid, mindless and very, very moe? :)

If you want K-On with more seriousness, try Soro no Woto (Sounds of the Sky). People get shot in it! Die even.
Shouldn't it be Sora no Woto?
Other than that, no I am not a big fan of most Moe or Mecha anime. (With a huge exception for the Macross series, except for Macross 7.)

Partly from a PM discussion I had with Sug, some of the titles I enjoy (And own):
Baccano!
Berserk (I also own all 34 manga translated by Dark horse, can't wait for 35 to be released.)
Elfen Lied
Ghost in the Shell
Wolf's rain
Witch Hunter Robin
Le Chevalier d'Eon
Infinite Ryvius (Another exception in the Mecha genre, although this hardly counts as Mecha anime imo.)
Crest/Banner of the Stars
And quite a bit more.

And a few titles I enjoyed last year and are on the to buy list if ever released:
Higashi no Eden (Released, just need to contact Manga UK for a nice bargain on the BD.)
Freedom Project (Purrrrrrrrrrrr)
Canaan
Tytania
Requiem for the Phantom
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (this one made me, a grown man, nearly burst out in tears)
Spice and Wolf (I can recommend the novels too, up to volume 3 has been translated by Yen Press right now.)

Also still looking for:
Record of Lodoss Wars (The OVA not the TV series, I read they are gonna release it on Blu ray *glee*)

Currently I own over 200 anime dvds and blu ray and the collection still grows.
I'll post a list of what I own later because I don't know all titles from the top of my head.

What's the difference between "Meow" and "Purr"? :P

Ore no Imouto was pretty interesting, funny and kind of touching. I'm still waiting to see what the "true end" is rather than the "happy end" :P KissXSis something I need to catch up on :P it is funny but it's too close to hentai without being hentai, which makes it kinda uncomfortable to watch. Sora no Woto was kinda dull until the end, same art style as K-ON! and definitely had the same kind of feel.

Oh Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, I did cry at the end, was very sad

I caught the first episode of Bacanno! on FUNimation's youtube channel, ordered the box set :D

That's good, reminded me that I've got these that I plan to eventually watch....

O: Yoake mae yori ruriiro na
N: Laputa / L:Laputa
L: King of Thorn
l: Happy Seven
O: Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
N: LOGH

*ignore the drive letters, I keep the ripped anime (from my DVD or BR or downloaded) in separate drives. For every anime I've watched, I'd probably have 2.5-3 that I haven't watched but have ripped. More and more, I'm downloading rather than ripping though. Aside from prices that are double that in the US (if it's ever released in the US that is), the quality of the subs on the official releases are just terrible in most cases. It hurts my eyes, especially when you know enough japanese... a vicious circle? They sub terribly, we don't buy, they sub even more terribly... ahh the days of FMP...

I've also a T and U section. T is for Stuff I Watched But Don't Plan to Watch Again. U is.. well Unwatchable. Things like Candidate for Goddess or Kiss X Sis. Doesn't mean the anime's bad... just my own preferences. I'll probably put Queen's Blade in there too... if I ever buy/watch it...

Regarding Fun's shortlived simulcast, or CR's for that matter.... sometimes the subs are off a tad. Either from a mistake or too much 'americanization'. Plus the BR is just so much better. A shame they don't have the high quality HD in Japan that we get in the States. I PVR'ed some BSG episodes while I was in NY watching the Sci-Fi channel and it's very comparable to a BR-rip. Perhaps in Japan, the bit-rate is lower or something. Quite often, I'd PVR the HDTV show in Japan, wait for a fan-sub to come out, and demux the subs then mux it into my rips. Well something to do.

Meow - good, I'd pull your tail again.

Purr - I'm still holding on to your tail.

Subs are about as bad everywhere.
I used to be a subtitle QC for a small company that released anime in the BeNeLux for a short time, they translated ok but mostly to Flemish which to any foreign language would be the same but for the Dutch it is detrimental.
Other then that, companies uphold a standard regarding subtitles like the amount of letters per line, the amount of lines, the position and the time the subtitles must be displayed on the screen, which may make it apear translated badly but may the best alternative given the standards they are to uphold.

Fansubbers do not uphold any standards at all, at least most of them don't, which is clearly visible in the speed of the subtitles or the lines of text filling up half your screen, or subs being all over the place or simply missing oh and the people finding it nice to use a different unreadable font and/or color because it "fits the series".
Or the ever so annoying "Translator notes:", and don't get me started on translations based on interpretation.

Asphe, about your T and U sections... Why don't you just delete it?

And yeah, the prices of DVDs and BD are horrendously high in Japan, although when looking for second hand you do find some nice barigains here and there.
Personally I always plan a few visits to Book-Off and other second hand stores when in Japan.

I didn't think official subs were bad :? what companies do bad ones? The best anime DVDs I own are Excel Saga, the dubs are excellent and bring new life to the anime and it has extra "subtitles" that explain all the weird jokes, puns and references. They really did their homework, it's just a shame ADV went under. These days it seems like FUNimation gets like 75% of the licensed anime, which isn't a bad thing since they've certainly upped their game over the past few years. It's kinda fun watching a new anime and spotting an old voice :P Oh look, Luck is Black Cat with a gangster accent

What's wrong with translator notes? Sometimes they're very handy :P Fansubbing quality has seemed to dip, I remember back in the days with AnimeOne and ANBU, they seemed like excellent groups. Now there's HorribleSubs doing just about everything under the moon and CrunchySubs doing all the same anime (what's the deal with that?). Groups seem to be at war with each other saying they steal translations and even get fake subs being realised, seriously what's the deal with that? Even the good groups seem to take too many liberties with their translations.

Because the "code of honor" that the old fansubbing groups upheld is gone.
Nowadays the groups want to have as many anime as they can possibly get on their names without regard of any other group that subs it or even if the title has already been licensed by a company outside of Japan.
They even go as far as like you say "wage war" against other groups to create the illusion of having the "sole right" to sub and release whatever they goddamn please.

Fansubbing always has been and always will be illegal, the old groups knew that very well.
But their way of work at least gave a feeling that they trying to were promote titles which were back then not yet available in the rest of the world on any legal means.
As soon as the word came out that X-company licensed it they stopped subbing and releasing it and everyone continuing to sub and host would be cast out.

Current day fansubbers however just want free anime and whatever miniscule amount of fame they can get for giving it, regardless of quality or respect towards the people making anime.
The only thing worse then these guys are the people making and selling bootleg dvds.
No, I don't have a high regard for the current fansubbing groups.

There's some small groups that not only try their best to bring the most accurate subs they can but also do anime that others aren't. I have respect for those guys; FFFpeeps, Chihiro and Ayako come to mind.

I'm also surprised it took so long for someone to pick up Wolverine :P

I know Ayako from the J-Drama scene, there's quite a few series I follow.
I'm also surprised it took so long for someone to pick up Wolverine :P
Because it's been licensed even before the first episode was made.

Taka actually handles Naruto pretty accurately and without the bs censoring that CR likes to do.

NoGrp is about the best Bleach fansub I have found since Dattebayo dropped it. It isn't great but it is still better then CR. Fortunately the interesting part of bleach is all but over so this is a non issue.

Yibia handles one piece Decently. I honestly preferred Kaizoku but they are just too damn far behind.

Long story short for me is I would gladly pay for an official Sub If it wasn't Censored and they didn't restrict playback devices. Crunchyroll censors vulgarity and won't support streaming on a PS3 so I in turn refuse to support them. Illegal or not, I as a customer am not paying for an inferior product. That and the translating of the attacks does get on my nerves, honestly everything does not have to be in english to be understood. If you are 400 bloody episodes into something and haven't figured out what the attack name is, well you have bigger problems.

Dubs are another story entirely. I purchase them because I want to support the artist of the anime I enjoy. However I wont watch them as they are on average just flat out horrible. Granted there are a few dubs that aren't bad, but most of them the voice acting is sub par if not out right shitty (I'm looking at you one piece).

For me liking a dub has a lot to do whether I saw it first in Japanese or not. This is probably why a lot of so-called "otaku" hate on dubs without giving them a chance. I'm still getting used to the English Luck in Bacanno, the Japanese voice is pretty deep and the seiyuu has done a lot so jumping from that to "Black Cat" was a little off putting :P Loving J. Michael Tatum as Isaac though, and Caitlin Glass as his air-headed bimbo side-kick, Miria :D

I tend to prefer dubs even if they're not that great as I'm quite lazy and can't be bothered to read subs :P I'll only watch subs if I find the dub so annoying, Love Hina is a good example of that.

Excel Saga, best dub ever! Ouran High School Host Club also has an excellent dub I find. Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, awesomeness, Wendee Lee, Crispin Freeman and the almighty Johnny Yong Bosch ( ) are IMO some of the best English VAs in the business. Ah! My Goddess (movie) and Adventures of Mini Goddess also awesome, the original Oh! My Goddess is quite good and the Ah! My Goddess TV is pretty good but just not up to standard of the movie, still think Wendee Lee does the best Urd voice :D shame she only did the Mini Goddess :( Death Note is another awesome dub IMO, Brad Swaile's Kira laugh at the end sent shivers down my back

Worst dubs I've seen/heard are Sailor Moon and Card Captors, ontop of that they totally killed the story and removed the gay-undertones.

I've been getting more that way the last few years too. If I have the option to watch it in english, I do. I just finished Clannad in english and it was pretty decent.

I really laugh in anime club when a mkv gets loaded and it decides to put on the english version.. all the cries and moans you get from the audience makes you think they're in physical pain from hearing 10 sec of english, even if its a good dub. So far in about 5 years of going, I think we've only watched two series in english, Golden Boy (because it is definately better in english), and Afro Samurai (don't think there is another language option for that one)
The most wasted day of all is one in which we have not laughed.

Oh don't get me wrong, I prefer a dub if it is good. One good example of a dub being better then the japanese, DBZ. Holy crap that series was nerve grating with japanese voices.

Lets see..of the ones I have watched and can remember...

Good Dubs -
Last Exile
Xenosaga - not great but more then passable on netflix stream now.
Witchblade - little more fanservicy then I usually like but somehow got interested in the story and finished it on netflix.
Claymore
Deathnote
DBZ - this not paying attention to how the series went from awesome to shitty.

Bad dubs
One Piece - funimation is better then the atrocity that 4kids did, but still the voice acting is BAD.
Bleach - This one "might" be passable if I never heard the japanese. It is pretty rough though.
Naruto - Ugh This applies to both original and shippuden.
Neo Gen Evangelion - Dear God..that is all. Oh and the new remakes of this are Freaking AWESOME.

Sure there is more for both lists, but can't think of them off the top of my head.

Anime Society back at uni would only show subs too :P When they gave the option for Eva everyone voted dub but I wasn't there since it's not my kind of anime :P Though that was a good 10 years or so ago, back then there were very few good dubs or even passable with most being quite bad.

DBZ is bad no matter what language it's in :P Problem with the original Japanese is Goku/Gohan/Bardock seiyuu being a woman and their high-pitched screeching, it worked for the original DB when Goku was a kid but that voice does not work for adults :tsk:

Bleach, though I've never seen the dub, Ichigo is voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch, YEAH! JYB FTW! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xufl4lnkhQM video showing how "awesome" he is  I actually disagree with that video :P Anyone who says he only has one voice and is bland hasn't seen his work in DMC4 (plus he did the mocap for that as well).

Naruto, I've only seen the dub in a game but found it passable and better than expected TBH. They stopped the "believe it!" long ago, which was the biggest annoyance really :P Fun fact: the ADR director is also the voice of Major Motoko Kusanagi from GitS SAC :P

Sugami wrote:I didn't think official subs were bad :? what companies do bad ones?

Funny you should say AnimeOne and ANBU. I remember some big mistakes they have made in the past (like they are alone right?) but overall, the fan-subbers are a very mixed bag. The way I scratch it, a sub can either be literal (my preference), minimalist translation (i.e. they don't just keep the honorifics but have kept in mind the 'fans' are knowledgeable) and 'localised or americanized. Ever watch Disney's take on Majo no Takoyubbin? It can be fun to watch it with the new english dub & old english sub. Then watch it again with the new eng sub and original japanese dub. And that's from a very professional release, what more fan-subbers? Some of the GITS were just terrible and it's obvious a lot of the TLs are not fluent in japanese.

Oh well, good reason to learn japanese right? :)
Sugami wrote:There's some small groups that not only try their best to bring the most accurate subs they can but also do anime that others aren't. I have respect for those guys; FFFpeeps, Chihiro and Ayako come to mind.

I'm also surprised it took so long for someone to pick up Wolverine :P
I love these groups too, even when the sub is actually chinese->english. They even pick good shows most of the time.
Tivia wrote:Taka actually handles Naruto pretty accurately and without the bs censoring that CR likes to do.

This censorship thing is so dumb. And having to rip the stream, remux it, convert it to play on your own media server. But the worse thing about the localised dubs is the fact I know their voices all too well. There are so few NA VAs in the industry for obvious reasons. Plus a lot of times, because they don't have the right voice for the role or they want to americanize it... someone like Jennifer Hale dubs over Horie Yui... ehh?

-----

The kind of localised dubs I would like to see are more along the lines of FMP. They didn't try to dump all the honourifics and they tried very hard to keep the intent and above all, the spirit (they would somehow manage to keep things like the word games and jokes somehow, good writers).

Guess I didn't know enough Japanese at the time to pick up on those then (and still don't know enough no doubt) :P You can't really have literal translations without it sounding unnatural in English, there needs to be a little leeway to make it sound more natural and flowing. As long as it still has the same meaning then I'm fine with it.

One of the many anime I'm watching currently is SD Gundam Brave Battle Warriors or something, subbed by a group called Huzzah I believe. They took a few too many liberties to make the translation sound almost ye olde English, translated "matte" to "Stay your blades." rather than just a simple "Wait."

For subs I think there's no reason they should ditch the honorifics, people watching it in Japanese will know all about them so it's just inexcusable these days.

Reason being that there's only x amount of people that work for the company that licences it so the more anime you watch from said company the bigger chance of coming across the same voice actor twice (or more) :P If you're lucky you won't even recognise their voice, Monica Rial has a pretty big range as does Wendee Lee. JYB sounds the same in practically everything but that's because he gets hired for that voice :P Funnily enough these VAs are now almost as popular as the original Japanese seiyuu :P

Watch the Japanese too much and you get accustomed to the voice, becomes hard to accept any other. Need to remember these guys aren't trying to duplicate the character but make them their own whilst keeping true to them. I've barely seen Naruto in English but there was really only one voice I thought didn't fit (the bug guy whatever he's called).

I can't forgive Jennifer Hale for her Tira dub in Soul Calibur 4 :P

So there is no need to take them along in the subs.
I don't want to see -chan, -san, -sama or whatever in my subs, honorifics have no litteral translation so leave them OUT!
If they really want to translate honorifics they should only translate the ones that will still have meaning like the respectful honorifics -Sama or -Dono to Sir or Lady.
-chan to little or dear(est) depending on context.
Other then that just leave them alone.

If anyone uses foreign honorifics while speaking another language it makes me want to smack them face first into the nearest wall.

What if the honorific is part of the dialogue?
"Hey Haru-chan, you're like a hero!"
"I wouldn't say I'm a hero... and who are you calling Haru-chan?!!"

That's actually an extract from Ouran High School Host Club (more or less), they kept the "chan" in the dub as well. They kept the "senpai" as well, I'm trying to remember if they also had "san" and "kun" in the dub though I'm not sure if "kun" was ever used originally :P

The honorific also gives you an idea of the relationship between characters so it's good just to see it on screen to re-enforce what you heard.

Context:
Little Haru or Haru sweet(y).
In English there wouldn't be a 100% correct translation to this but using Japanese honorifics is also unprofessional.

"Little Haru(hi)" wouldn't work coming from Honey-senpai :P He uses "chan" with a shortened form of their first name with everyone. Sure they could have probably thought of something to get around it (like not replacing "dattebayo" with "believe it" all the time in Naruto), removing the "chan" would be kinda like taking away a character trait from him not to mention it being a real time saver.

Honorifics are also part of the culture, take them away and you're also removing some of the culture from the anime.

One of my biggest gripes with dubs is when they say something like "Don't you understand English?" when it's set in Japan and the characters are clearly Japanese. It may be a dub but the characters are still talking Japanese.

Oh the joys of 4kids!

Or do you prefer the early days of Funimation?
Going back to Tivia's resentment for the DBZ Japanese dub perhaps because the voices might be annoying.
Son Goku is a hugely perverted guy that never grew up, his voice in the Japanese dub of DB(Z) represents that, he's a big kid.
His US voice and the whole snip-a-snap Funimation did with censoring the series makes him sound and look like a whole different heroic kinda person that sounds like Mighty Mouse at the same time completely warping and contorting the rest of the stories.

They did the same with the Sailor Moon series and a couple of other titles until they really got on the bad side of the anime fans.

Now going back to honorifics; Honorifics are unprofessional in official release translations.
Find the right context and something can be worked out, in this case I'd keep the name shortened like:

"Hey Haru, you're like a hero!"
"I wouldn't say I'm a hero... and who are you calling Haru?!!" (As in, my name is Haruhi!)
Even though the translation is far from accurate this can go through as a good alternative without breaking the whole context and without resorting to unprofessional alternatives.

Keep in mind that translators do this for the general public, not for the hand full of Otaku that think honorifics look cute.

Mew Mew Power? That's not what the US called Tokyo Mew Mew is it? (which sucks BTW) 4kids hasn't done anything right, they even censored Pokémon. FUNimation was pretty diabolical a while back, now the ADR director is also a VA (usually) so they know the industry quite well and usually get a good result out of it.

5-10 years ago I might have agreed but now the general pubic = otaku, at least when it comes to watching anime. I don't really consider it unprofessional, especially when there's heavy use of honorifics and it'd be really hard to actually get around it.

Think it was Witch Hunter Robin where the chief referred to Robin as "Robin-chan" to which one of his underlings responded with "Chan?" There are other times when characters will question what honorific is being used with their name or insist on dropping certain honorifics. Instances like that it'd be kind of hard to avoid the use of honorifics.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree :P

You know, I was in the translation team for the Dutch subtitles of the Beez release of that series.
Which episode was that again, I will have to look up how we translated that from the context.

Yes I know, and I know that FM has become a lot better over the years but that is because they did listen to the fanbase and most likely also added a few of them to their personel file.
Anime wise Funimation is becoming one of the bigger western players regarding licensed titles and merchandise.
5-10 years ago I might have agreed but now the general pubic = otaku, at least when it comes to watching anime. I don't really consider it unprofessional, especially when there's heavy use of honorifics and it'd be really hard to actually get around it.
No, it is the other way around, anime and manga is no longer the niche product exclusively for that select group..
Anime and manga up to 10 years ago were Otaku niche products, nowadays anime and manga are becoming more accessible and thankfully losing a lot of the reputation it built up back in the early 90's.
The last mainly thanks to Ghibli for their family friendly features getting renowned, but also the older anime fans taking people's attention to their own childhood cartoons and pointing out that a lot of those came from or were made in Japan.
Or telling them about the fact that the only part of the Power rangers that was truly American were the 'Beverly hills' teenagers in the scenes where they weren't wearing those silly suits and making acrobatic moves, the rest of the footage came from the Japanese sentai series called Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger and was dubbed into English. Including Rita and her gang of villains. (Machiko Soga, May she rest in peace.)

Commercially:
In countries like Germany and France and even on the other side of the ocean on a continent called North-America Anime and Manga is dominant in the book and mediastores, and even over here in our little backwater country called the Netherlands the larger media stores are filling up 2x2 meter or larger displays with anime, also naming it such. But also placed right besides the Disney and other western cartoons instead of a dark hidden corner in the back of the shop with a dusty sign saying "Special interest" or *cringe* Manga (Video).
The comic book stores are also starting to have racks and cases specifically for Manga and Manhua (Chinese and Korean comics) which are starting to take a large part of their shops and even the mainstream bookstores are starting to build a small but growing selection of localized and imported manga.

Fanbase:
Conventions have grown in the number of visitors and are still growing, but also the number of conventions has increased.
Holland itself currently has 4 anime specific conventions including one specialized in Yaoi and Yuri, until 2003 there was only one;
Namely our convention which back then had 700 visitors and we're hoping for 2000 or even 2100 visitors this year.
I also know that there are more organizations looking to get a spot setting up their own convention and I am not counting the seperate events like filmnights, dance events and concerts.
Conventions and other gatherings completely unrelated to anime and manga have been inviting our conventions' presence wether it be in the form of a table in the dealerroom or to help organize one or a set of events at their conventions. Of course we also return the favor.
So not only is it becoming more mainstream, other "niche" cultures like that of Comics and SciFi have also started accepting and even inviting the presence of anime and manga within their ranks.

Media:
Our own convention has been approached more than a few years by local and national media for coverage of our event and the media is also spending more time these days covering Japanese popular culture and thankfully mostly the positive aspects of it and not only the dark side of it like Hikikomori, Chikan and other perversities and social problems.
Although less again these days, Dutch TV had quite a few anime titles for a while, including Dragonball Z, Sailor Moon, Tonde Buurin, Gatchaman, Tekkaman and Card Captor Sakura.
Oh, and Holland may have a real Manga library soon.

Brittain doesn't differ that much from Holland when it comes to anime and manga from what I have seen last November.
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree :P
I guess we do.

No it's not niche but rather than the general public starting to like it I think it's more of a case that the "otaku" group has grown to quite a sizeable amount. The people that like anime/manga are "otaku", sure there might be the odd person that doesn't mind the odd anime or manga but in general the majority of the people who do like it are "otaku" to some extent.

Over here in the UK it is still pretty niche, there's a few more conventions but you'll find very few anime on freeview, the ones that are shown are Pokémon and the such on children's channels. At best there'll be two or so channels on Sky or cable that'll show anime and they're probably pretty old anime too; DBZ, Gundam Wing, Cowboy Bebop etc.

Also a convention specifically for (gay) hentai? Can't say I'm all that surprised considering it's in Holland :P

Also also, "lazy"? Expect me to search through my library of burnt anime to find Witch Hunter Robin and watch through it until I find the right episode? I don't think so :P
